US--BIG TECH-ELECTRICITY CUTOFFS

US electric grids under pressure from energy-hungry data centers are changing strategy

SUMMARY: As Big Tech’s data centers continue to grow threatening to overload U.S. electricity grids, policymakers are considering bumping the energy-hungry data centers off grids during power emergencies. Texas moved first to try to protect residents in the data-center hotspot from another deadly blackout like the winter storm in 2021 when dozens died. Lawmakers there passed a bill in June that orders up standards for power emergencies when utilities must disconnect big electric users. Now the concept is emerging in the 13-state mid-Atlantic grid and elsewhere as massive data centers are coming online faster than power plants can be built.

US--CHARLIE KIRK-SHOT-FACT FOCUS

FACT FOCUS: Assassination of Charlie Kirk prompts flood of false and misleading claims online

SUMMARY: A bevy of false and misleading claims proliferated on social media in the two days it took officials to arrest and publicly identify 22-year-old Tyler Robinson as the suspect in Wednesday’s assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. This reaction reflects a phenomenon often seen after breaking news events, when a lack of concrete facts is filled by misinformation and conspiracy theories. Such posts appeared within hours of the killing. Some of the earliest incorrectly identified the shooter before officials had released any information about a suspect. More claims spawned on Thursday and Friday, presenting old videos and photos as recent footage of the shooter and erroneously reporting on Robinson’s background.

US--IMMIGRATION RAID-HYUNDAI PLANT

Families in crisis after massive immigration raid at Hyundai plant in Georgia

SUMMARY: After Koreans detained in a historic raid on a Georgia Hyundai plant were sent home, lawyers and social workers say the nearly 200 non-Korean workers ensnared in the crackdown remain in legal limbo. Some are still unaccounted for. Rosie Harrison, who runs a nonprofit, says her organization’s phones have been ringing nonstop with panicked families needing help. The early September raid involved federal agents taking workers’ cellphones and detaining them. Some workers had legal authorization to work in the U.S. The raid has left families desperate for basic needs like food and baby formula.

Waves of fake threats to colleges are putting students on edge and testing dispatchers

SUMMARY: Around 50 college campuses across the country have been deluged in recent weeks with hoax calls about armed gunmen and other violence, laying bare the challenges of detecting fake threats quickly to prevent mass panic. Students at some schools spent hours hiding under desks, only to find out later it someone’s idea of a entertainment. On Thursday, several historically Black colleges locked down or canceled classes after receiving threats, at a time when the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk at a Utah college had campuses newly on edge. In other cases, schools figured out early that something was amiss, but even then it took time and resources.

US--CHARLIE KIRK SHOT-WHAT TO KNOW

What to know about the killing of Charlie Kirk, the co-founder of Turning Point USA

SUMMARY: Authorities have arrested a 22-year-old Utah man in the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. “We got him,” Gov. Spencer Cox told reporters at a news conference Friday announcing the arrest of Tyler Robinson in Wednesday’s killing of Kirk during an outdoor debate at Utah Valley University. Authorities say Robinson, a student at a different college, was taken into custody Thursday night. Robinson’s father recognized him from images released by authorities and encouraged him to turn himself in, a law enforcement official told The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation. Cox says Robinson’s family said Robinson had been critical of Kirk.

US--CHARLIE KIRK SHOT-SUSPECT

Man arrested in Charlie Kirk’s killing had no known criminal history, had become ‘more political’

SUMMARY: The family of the young Utah man accused of shooting Charlie Kirk has told authorities he had recently become “more political” and recounted a dinner table conversation where they discussed whether the conservative activist was spreading hate. That’s according to a probable cause statement released Friday. A judge ordered Tyler James Robinson held without bail. Utah state records show the 22-year-old is registered to vote but not affiliated with a political party. His address is listed as his parents’ home in a suburb outside of St. George in southern Utah. Social media posts made by his mother through 2022 show an active family that spent time outdoors. It wasn’t immediately clear whether Robinson had a lawyer.

US--CHARLIE KIRK SHOT

Suspect in Charlie Kirk killing became more political, opposed activist’s views, authorities say

SUMMARY: A 22-year-old Utah man who was booked on murder charges in the assassination of Charlie Kirk held deep disdain for the conservative activist’s provocative viewpoints and indicated to a family member that he was responsible for the shooting. That’s what authorities said Friday as they announced the arrest of Tyler Robinson, which marked a major break in a case that shocked the country and raised fresh alarms about political violence in a deeply polarized United States. Utah Governor Spencer Cox said Robinson had become “more political” in the run-up to the shooting and mentioned during a dinner with family that Kirk would be visiting Utah. US--ELECTION 2026-REDISTRICTING

Missouri Senate passes Trump-backed plan that could help Republicans win an additional US House seat

SUMMARY: The Missouri Senate has passed a plan backed by President Donald Trump that could help Republicans win an additional U.S. House seat. The Senate’s vote Friday sends the measure to Republican Gov. Mike Kehoe for his expected signature. But opponents immediately announced a referendum petition that could force a statewide vote on the new map. Missouri is the third state to take up congressional redistricting ahead of the 2026 elections. Republicans in Texas passed a new House map aimed at winning five more seats. Democrats in California countered with their own redistricting plan aimed at picking up five seats, but it still needs voter approval.

Cox spoke Friday at a news conference announcing authorities had a suspect in the conservative activist’s killing in custody. Cox says this is a moment to make a choice: escalate or “find an off-ramp.” The two-term Republican governor has, throughout his political career, issued pleas for bipartisan cooperation and drawn national attention for his empathetic remarks. Choose your America: In the aftermath of the Kirk slaying, a snapshot of a fractured nation

SUMMARY: The governor of Utah struggled to find the right words to describe the question so many have been asking: What is happening in America? The silence lasted nearly 10 seconds. He looked down. He opened and closed his mouth. “Our nation is broken,” Spencer Cox finally said, hours after the killing of Charlie Kirk. The governor described violent attacks on both Democrats and Republicans, including the killing of Minnesota lawmaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, two assassination attempts on President Donald Trump and the firebombing of Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro’s official residence. His words stood out not just for the stark language about America’s troubles, but for his sober, somber acknowledgement that the violence reaches across the political divide.
