US--MINNESOTA-LAWMAKERS SHOT

“No Kings” protests in Minnesota canceled as authorities search for suspect who shot 2 lawmakers.

SUMMARY: Police in Minnesota are cautioning residents to avoid “No Kings” protests after two state lawmakers and their spouses were shot early Saturday. Police have recovered writings that mentioned the names of multiple lawmakers and other officials in the fake police car that they believe a suspect used in the shooting of two Democratic legislators in Minnesota. Melissa Hortman, a former Minnesota House Speaker, and her spouse were killed in their Brooklyn Park home. A second state lawmaker, Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, were shot multiple times in Champlin. Brooklyn Park Police Chief Mark Bruley said that the writings that were recovered identified many lawmakers and other officials. Officials say both Hortman and Hoffman were mentioned in the suspect’s writings.

US--PROTESTS

Protesters crowd into streets, parks and plazas at anti-Trump ‘No Kings’ demonstrations across US

SUMMARY: Demonstrators are gathering in cities across the U.S. against President Donald Trump. That’s happening Saturday as officials urge calm, National Guard troops mobilize and Trump attends a military parade in Washington to mark the Army’s 250th anniversary. Thousands gathered for a flagship “No Kings” march in Philadelphia to the Museum of Art. Atlanta’s 5,000-capacity “No Kings” rally quickly reached its limit, with thousands more outside the barrier to hear speakers in front of the state Capitol. Governors and city officials are vowing to protect the right to protest and to show no tolerance for violence. Republican governors in Virginia, Texas and Missouri are mobilizing National Guard troops.

US--IMMIGRATION RAIDS-LOS ANGELES

Marines take over some security in LA while cities across US prep for ‘No Kings’ rallies

SUMMARY: After a week of protests over federal immigration raids, about 200 Marines have moved into Los Angeles to guard a federal building and personnel in the city. Meanwhile, communities across the country are prepping for what’s anticipated to be a nationwide wave of large-scale demonstrations against President Donald Trump’s polices this weekend. The troops with rifles, combat gear and walkie-talkies took over some posts from National Guard members who were deployed to the city after the protests erupted last week. Those protests sparked dozens more over several days around the country, with some leading to clashes with police and hundreds of arrests.

US--KAREN READ TRIAL

Jury begins deliberating whether Karen Read is guilty of murder in Boston police boyfriend’s death

SUMMARY: Jurors in the second murder trial of Karen Read have begun deliberating after weeks of testimony. The highly divisive case has hinged on the prosecution’s theory of jaded love turned deadly. That is countered by a defense claim that a cast of tight-knit Boston area law enforcement killed a fellow police officer. Jurors began deliberating Friday and did not reach a verdict. They will be back Monday. Read is accused of fatally striking her boyfriend, Boston police officer John O’Keefe, with her SUV and leaving him to die in the snow outside a house party where other police and a federal agent were closing out a night of drinking in 2022.

Things to know about the retrial of Karen Read in the killing of her police officer boyfriend

SUMMARY: The jury did not reach a verdict on the first day of deliberations in the second murder trial of Karen Read, who is charged with killing her Boston police officer boyfriend. Deliberations began Friday after both sides presented their closing arguments on the 33rd day of the trial. Read is accused of striking John O’Keefe with her car outside a suburban Boston house party and leaving him to die in the snow in January 2022. She has been charged with second-degree murder, manslaughter and leaving the scene. Read’s lawyers say O’Keefe was beaten, bitten by a dog, then left outside a home in Canton in a conspiracy orchestrated by the police that included planting evidence against Read.

SUMMARY: Ye, the rapper formerly known as Kanye West, says he came to the New York sex trafficking trial of Sean “Diddy” Combs to support him but couldn’t enter the packed courtroom. US--IMMIGRATION-CALIFORNIA-LAWSUIT

Appeals court temporarily blocks judge’s ruling to return control of National Guard to California

SUMMARY: The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has temporarily blocked a federal judge’s order that directed President Donald Trump to return control of National Guard troops to California after he deployed them there following protests in Los Angeles over immigration raids. The court said it would hold a hearing on the matter on Tuesday. The ruling came only hours after a federal judge’s order was to take effect at noon Friday. Earlier Thursday, U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer ruled the Guard deployment was illegal and both violated the Tenth Amendment and exceeded Trump’s statutory authority. The order applied only to the National Guard troops and not Marines who were also deployed to the LA protests.

US--TRUMP-MILITARY PARADE

The Army is set to celebrate 250 years with a parade that coincides with Trump’s birthday

SUMMARY: A massive military parade unfolding against the backdrop of President Donald Trump’s unconventional flex of fighting forces in American streets this week is on track to begin with tanks, bands and thousands of troops. Saturday’s parade, honoring the Army’s long-planned 250th anniversary celebration and coinciding with Trump’s 79th birthday, is set to step off from the Lincoln Memorial under the threat of stormy weather in Washington and the potential for protests around the country tied to a turbulent week of immigration enforcement that has involved military deployment in Los Angeles. Trump has brushed off the possibility of both disruptions, with a social media post Saturday morning that said the “great military parade” would be on “rain on shine.”

US--G7 SUMMIT-TRUMP

As Trump goes to G7 summit, other world leaders aim to show they’re not intimidated

SUMMARY: President Donald Trump has long bet that he can scare allies into submission. It’s a gamble that is increasingly being tested ahead of the Group of Seven summit beginning Monday in Canada. His return to the White House has disrupted global affairs — with the latest evidence being Israel’s attack on Iran to thwart its nuclear ambitions. But many world leaders see fewer reasons to be cowed by Trump, even as they acknowledge the damage that could occur if he followed through on his economic and national security threats.

Trump officials have been reaching deep into communities across the country to ramp up deportations and fought for the health data on immigrants from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Trump says Iran has ‘second chance’ to come to nuclear deal as Israel and Iran exchange blows

SUMMARY: President Donald Trump is urging Iran to make a nuclear deal now that Israel has launched strikes against the country. Trump says on social media Iran should make a deal “before there is nothing left and save what was once known as the Iranian Empire.” Trump is holding onto hope the long-simmering dispute over Tehran’s nuclear program can be resolved. But with the Israeli military operation now underway and likely to continue for some time, Trump will be tested anew on his ability to deliver on a campaign promise to disentangle the U.S. from foreign conflicts. The Republican president is already struggling to find an endgame to the conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza.

Judge blocks Trump’s election executive order, siding with Democrats who called it overreach

SUMMARY: The attorneys general for California and New York are praising a federal judge’s decision to block President Donald Trump’s executive order on elections. The judge in Massachusetts on Friday sided with the Democratic state attorneys general, who called the Republican president’s executive order overreach. Trump’s order sought to compel officials to require documentary proof of citizenship for everyone registering to vote for federal elections and accept mailed ballots only if received by Election Day. The attorneys general say Trump’s order was unconstitutional. The White House has defended Trump’s order as “standing up for free, fair and honest elections.” The judge says the Constitution doesn’t grant the president any specific powers over elections.

Israeli strikes on Iran’s nuclear program are sweeping but can they decimate it?

SUMMARY: Israel’s sweeping attack across Iran struck at the heart of Tehran’s nuclear program, delivering a blow to the country’s ability to enrich uranium and potentially setting its nuclear ambitions back by months or years. As well as killing key military figures and nuclear scientists, the Israeli strikes destroyed part of a plant that was enriching uranium to levels far beyond the requirements for nuclear-fueled power stations. The attacks also destroyed backup power for the underground section of the plant, potentially damaging more sensitive equipment. Iran’s nuclear program has progressed rapidly since 2018, when the U.S. withdrew from a deal to limit Tehran’s capacity to enrich uranium.
