US--TRUMP-TRAVEL BAN

Trump’s new travel ban takes effect as tensions escalate over immigration enforcement

SUMMARY: President Donald Trump’s new ban on travel to the United States by citizens from 12 mainly African and Middle Eastern countries is now in effect. The ban took effect on Monday and comes as tensions escalate over the president’s campaign of immigration enforcement. Trump signed the new proclamation last week. It applies to citizens of Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, the Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen. It also imposes heightened restrictions on people from Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan and Venezuela who are outside the U.S. and don’t hold a valid visa.

US--IMMIGRATION RAIDS-LOS ANGELES

California governor plans to file lawsuit against Trump over National Guard deployment to protests

SUMMARY: California Gov. Gavin Newsom said he planned to file a lawsuit against President Donald Trump in response to the administration’s extraordinary deployment of the National Guard to confront immigration protesters who took to the streets in Los Angeles. Newsom, a Democrat, said that commandeering a state’s National Guard without consulting the governor of that state is “illegal and immoral.” The streets of the sprawling city of 4 million people were mostly quiet Monday morning, the day after crowds blocked off a major freeway and set self-driving cars on fire. Law enforcement responded with tear gas, rubber bullets and flash-bang grenades. Sunday’s protests were centered in several blocks of downtown and a handful of other places.

US--IMMIGRATION RAIDS-LOS ANGELES-THINGS TO KNOW

What to know about Trump’s deployment of National Guard troops to LA protests

SUMMARY: President Donald Trump has deployed California National Guard troops to Los Angeles to respond to immigration protests, over the objections of California Gov. Gavin Newsom. At least 300 arrived Sunday and protesters shouted “shame” and “go home” to them. It’s not the first time Trump has activated the National Guard to quell protests. In 2020, he asked governors of several states to send troops to Washington, D.C. to respond to demonstrations that arose after George Floyd was killed by Minneapolis police officers. Here are some things to know about when and how the president can deploy troops on U.S. soil.

Travel ban may shut door for Afghan family to bring niece to US for a better life

SUMMARY: Mohammad Sharafoddin, his wife and young son managed to make it out of Afghanistan as refugees nine years ago, at one point walking 36 hours over mountain passes. Sharafoddin hoped his wife’s niece could follow them to their new home in South Carolina. But President Donald Trump’s travel ban on people from Afghanistan and 11 other countries appears to have shut that door. Sharafoddin says his niece wants to be a doctor, and it is especially hard because she can’t study in her home country under the Taliban, who returned to power in 2021 .

US--TRUMP-NIH DISSENT

NIH scientists publish declaration criticizing Trump’s deep cuts in public health research

SUMMARY: President Donald Trump’s National Institutes of Health director says some employees’ critical letter to him has “fundamental misconceptions about the policy directions the NIH has taken.” Monday’s letter from NIH researchers and staffers says the Republican Trump administration’s policies waste public resources and harm people’s health. NIH Director Jay Bhattacharya in his confirmation hearings pledged openness to views that might conflict with his, saying dissent is the “essence of science.” The NIH employees’ letter says, “We dissent.” Bhattacharya says ”respectful dissent in science is productive.” The White House says it’s ”restoring the Gold Standard of Science” for federal research instead of pursuing “ideological activism.”

US--FBI-SHIFTING PRIORITIES

Under Patel, FBI heightens focus on violent crime, illegal immigration. Other threats abound, too

SUMMARY: The FBI under the leadership of Director Kash Patel has made fighting violent crime and illegal immigration top priorities. That effort brings the bureau into alignment with the vision of President Donald Trump, who has made a crackdown on illegal immigration, cartels and transnational gangs a cornerstone of his administration. The FBI said in a statement that its dedication to investigating terrorism had not changed but acknowledged that it “continuously analyzes the threat landscape” and makes adjustments as necessary. Yet some are concerned the heightened focus on violent crime and immigration risks diverting attention from some of the complicated criminal and national security threats for which the bureau has long borne primary responsibility for investigating.

US--DC-PRIDE MARCH

‘Not just a party:’ World Pride celebrations end with defiant politics on display

SUMMARY: After the raucous rainbow-hued festivities of Saturday’s parade, the final day of World Pride 2025 in the nation’s capital kicked off on a more downbeat note. Thousands gathered under grey skies Sunday morning at the Lincoln Memorial for a rally and protest march, as the community gathers its strength for a looming fight under President Donald Trump’s second administration. The speeches didn’t just target the Trump administration or the Republican party. Some turned their ire on Democratic politicians, who they say have wilted under the pressure of Republican control of the White House and both houses of Congress.

Israel seized a Gaza-bound boat with Greta Thunberg on board. Can it do that?

SUMMARY: Israeli naval forces, far from the country’s shores, intercepted and seized a Gaza-bound ship carrying international activists, including Greta Thunberg, in an early morning raid. The operation sparked accusations that Israel’s actions, apparently in the high seas, were a breach of international law. The activists say their journey was meant to protest Israel’s ongoing war in Gaza and the humanitarian crisis there. The ship was carrying aid destined for people in Gaza, including baby formula and food. The activists, including Thunberg, were detained and were headed to Israel for likely deportation. Israel says the ship planned to violate its blockade on Gaza and says it acted in accordance with international law.

Ukraine says Russia launched the biggest overnight drone bombardment of the war

SUMMARY: The Ukrainian air force says Russia launched 479 drones at the country in the war’s biggest overnight drone bombardment. It also said 20 missiles of various types were fired at different parts of Ukraine. The attacks usually start late in the evening and end in the morning because drones are harder to see in the dark. Russia has targeted civilian areas of Ukraine with Shahed drones since the start of the war. The U.N. says the attacks have killed more than 12,000 Ukrainian civilians. A recent escalation in aerial attacks has coincided with a renewed Russian battlefield push along eastern and northeastern parts of the roughly 1,000-kilometer (620-mile) front line.

Israeli forces seize Gaza-bound aid boat and detain Greta Thunberg and other activists

SUMMARY: Israeli forces have seized a Gaza-bound aid boat and detained Greta Thunberg and other activists on board. The Israelis were enforcing a longstanding blockade of the Palestinian territory that has been tightened during the Israel-Hamas war. The Freedom Flotilla Coalition had organized the voyage to deliver humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip and protest Israel’s blockade and wartime conduct. The group said that the activists had been “kidnapped by Israeli forces.” Israel said the passengers would return to their home countries and the aid would be delivered to Gaza through established channels.

Prefectural officials said the injuries were not life threatening, but no other details were immediately known. The four soldiers sustained finger injuries on Monday while working outside a facility that belongs to Okinawa prefecture and temporarily stores unexploded ordnance, mostly from wartime and found on the island. US--TRUMP-TRAVEL BAN-WHAT TO KNOW

Trump banned citizens of 12 countries from entering the US. Here’s what to know

SUMMARY: President Donald Trump has banned travel to the U.S. by citizens from 12 countries and restricted access for people from seven others. He cited national security concerns in resurrecting and expanding a hallmark policy of his first term that will mostly affect people from Africa and the Middle East. The ban took effect Monday and does not have an end date. International aid groups and refugee resettlement organizations roundly condemned the ban. Early in Trump’s first term, he issued an executive order banning travel to the U.S. by citizens of seven predominantly Muslim countries. The order was retooled amid legal challenges until a version was upheld by the Supreme Court in 2018.

Palestinians say Israeli fire kills 12 near aid sites. Israel says it fired warning shots

SUMMARY: Palestinian health officials and witnesses say Israeli fire killed at least 12 people as they headed toward two aid distribution points in Gaza. Israel’s military said it fired warning shots at people who approached its forces Sunday. The sites are run by an Israeli and U.S.-backed group. The past two weeks have seen frequent shootings near the new hubs where thousands of Palestinians are directed to collect food. Many are desperate after 20 months of war. The sites are inside Israeli military zones where independent media have no access. Gaza’s Health Ministry says in all, at least 108 bodies were brought to hospitals over the past 24 hours. New disputes emerge ahead of US-China trade talks in London

SUMMARY: U.S.-China trade talks in London this week are expected to take up a series of disputes that have buffeted relations. Since then, the U.S. and China have exchanged angry words over advanced semiconductors, “rare earths” that are vital to many industries and visas for Chinese students at American universities. Italians vote on citizenship and job protections in referendums threatened by low turnout

SUMMARY: Italians vote over two days on referendums that would make it easier for children born in Italy to foreigners to obtain citizenship, and on providing more job protections. But apparent low public awareness risks rendering the vote invalid if turnout is not high enough. Campaigners for the change in the citizenship law say it will help second-generation Italians born in the country to non-EU parents better integrate in a culture they already see as theirs. The referendum risks failure if 50% plus one of eligible voters don’t turn out. The measures were proposed by Italy’s main union and left-wing opposition parties.
