US--OBIT-CHARLES RANGEL

Former US Rep. Charles Rangel of New York dies at 94

SUMMARY: Former U.S. Rep. Charles Rangel of New York has died at age 94. The outspoken, gravel-voiced Harlem Democrat spent nearly five decades on Capitol Hill and was a founding member of the Congressional Black Caucus. His family confirmed his death in a statement provided by City College of New York spokesperson Michelle Stent. She said he died Monday at a New York hospital. A veteran of the Korean War, he defeated legendary Harlem politician Adam Clayton Powell in 1970 to start his congressional career. During the next 40-plus years, he became a legend himself. In 2010, the House censured him following an ethics scandal. But he stayed in Congress until 2017.

US--GEORGE FLOYD-MINNEAPOLIS

How has Minneapolis changed since the murder of George Floyd 5 years ago?

SUMMARY: Minneapolis has changed, slowly, since a city police officer murdered George Floyd on Memorial Day in 2020. The city is still struggling to decide what should become of the intersection where Floyd met his demise, which has become a place of pilgrimage known as George Floyd Square. City leaders have not agreed on whether to close the intersection to all traffic as a permanent memorial. Minneapolis has also begun a remake of its police department under court supervision — an effort that the mayor and police chief say will continue with or without the backing of the Trump administration.

SUMMARY: Authorities say 10 people were shot during a fight that started on a private boat holding a holiday weekend party on the South Carolina coast. Horry County Police say no one died in the shooting in Little River around 9:30 p.m. Sunday, although some of the wounded are in critical condition. At least one person was taken to the hospital who was not hurt by gunfire. Police say the shooting happened around a dock where a private charter boat leaves for cruises. The boat was docked, and detectives are trying to figure out exactly where the fight and shooting began.

US--CUBA DEPORTATIONS

Trump’s immigration crackdown unnerves Cuban exiles long shielded from deportation

SUMMARY: President Donald Trump’s crackdown on Cuban immigration has riveted a community that strongly backed him twice. After record arrivals of Cuban migrants, Trump wants to deport recent arrivals from the island. In March, he revoked temporary humanitarian parole for about 300,000 Cubans. Many have been detained ahead of possible deportation. Cuban-Americans in South Florida have long clamored for a firmer hand with Havana. One expert says singling out former Communist Party officials for deportation is “a political gift to Cuban-American hardliners.” But he says many Cubans fear they could be next on Trump’s list, and some in the community see it as a betrayal.

US--DIVORCE-REDUCED OUTCOMES

US children of divorce have reduced earnings, increased chances of teen births and jail, study says

SUMMARY: Young children of divorce in the U.S. have reduced earnings as adults and increased chances of teen pregnancy and incarceration. That’s according to a new study released this month. After a divorce, a household’s income typically is halved as a family splits into two households, and they struggle to recover that lost income over the next decade. The study was conducted by economists at the University of California-Merced, the Census Bureau and the University of Maryland. It says families after divorce also tend to move to neighborhoods with lower incomes that offer reduced economic opportunities.

SUMMARY: President Donald Trump has honored fallen service members with remarks at Arlington National Cemetery to commemorate Memorial Day. Trump on Monday also placed a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, a somber tradition for U.S. presidents. Trump began the day with a decidedly different tone. In an all-caps social media message, Trump ranted at former President Joe Biden, calling him a “scum” who spent four years trying to destroy the country. Trump also went after federal judges who have blocked efforts to enact his mass deportation agenda.

SUMMARY: Four months into the Trump administration, some top Democrats are rethinking their approach to podcasts. Some high-profile politicians with 2028 aspirations are starting their own shows or venturing more into popular ones with already large audiences. Taking a reflective look back at their opponent’s strategy, Democratic strategists point out that Trump used podcasts to take his message to new audiences, and hope that their party’s next round of candidates can successfully do the same.

SUMMARY: President Donald Trump says the U.S. will delay implementation of a 50% tariff on goods from the European Union from June 1 until July 9 to buy time for negotiations with the bloc. That agreement came after a call Sunday with Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission. Trump says she told him she “wants to get down to serious negotiations.” Trump told reporters later Sunday that he had told “anybody that would listen, they have to do that.” He said Von der Leyen vowed to “rapidly get together and see if we can work something out.”

CN--CANADA KING CHARLES

King Charles III’s visit to Canada underscores its sovereignty to Trump

SUMMARY: King Charles III is to arrive in Ottawa on a visit that underscores Canada’s sovereignty to U.S. President Donald Trump. Trump’s repeated suggestion that the U.S. annex its northern neighbor prompted Prime Minister Mark Carney to invite Charles to give the speech from the throne that will outline his government’s agenda for the new Parliament. The king is the head of state in Canada, which is a member of the British Commonwealth of former colonies. Canadians are largely indifferent to the monarchy, but Carney has been eager to show the differences between Canada and the United States. He said the king’s visit clearly underscores the sovereignty of Canada.

LT--VENEZUELA-ELECTION

Many Venezuelan voters, frustrated and disillusioned, skip election for lawmakers and governors

SUMMARY: Venezuelans still reeling from the outcome of last year’s presidential election did not respond to government calls to get out and vote for lawmakers, governors and other officials. That left voting centers practically empty at times and put officials on the defensive. The election, which the political opposition urged people to boycott, was the first to allow broad voter participation since last year’s presidential contest, which President Nicolás Maduro claimed to have won despite credible evidence to the contrary. Sunday’s vote took place two days after the government detained dozens of people, including a prominent opposition leader, and linked them to an alleged plot to hinder the vote.

Each side brought home 303 more soldiers in Sunday’s exchange after each released a total of 307 combatants and civilians on Saturday, and 390 on Friday. The swap was the biggest since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 and came just hours after Ukraine’s capital of Kyiv and other regions came under a massive Russian drone-and-missile attack that killed at least 12 people and injured dozens. EU--FRANCE-SPORTS-BANNING HEADSCARVES

A headscarf ban is keeping basketball players off the court. A new bill could make it law in France

SUMMARY: Thousands of young Muslim women in France are sidelined from competitive sport because of rules in several disciplines including basketball that ban uniforms and other clothing carrying a religious or political significance. Critics of the rules say they disproportionately target hijab-wearing Muslim athletes. Now, a contentious bill backed by right-wing politicians that would ban headscarves in all sporting competitions has cleared its first legislative hurdle in the Senate. If passed by the lower house, it would enshrine into law what has until now been decided by individual sporting federations. Supporters say the proposed law is a necessary step to protect secularism.
