Saturday is the day residents of the Shore have been waiting for – lovely autumn weather, leaves beginning to turn shades of red and yellow and a multitude of activities, contests and events to enjoy with family and friends.

Among them is the first local expo designed for those older than 55 with the promise for a bright future, Salisbury University’s popular Seagull Century bike ride and a corn hole tournament. There’s even a taco-eating contest and beer festival on tap.

Saturday’s schedule includes the following.

• "Thrive: Senior Life After 55 Expo," from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at MAC Inc., the Area Agency on Aging.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be at 3 p.m. Friday and feature music from North Meets South and previews of vendors who will be at the expo. Light refreshments will be served.

At the event, vendors will offer information on a variety of businesses and services of interest to those 55 and older. Door prizes will be awarded and there will be giveaways and interactive activities.

The event’s business sponsors are Holloway Funeral Home, Peninsula Home Care at Nanticoke, Peninsula Home Care Maryland, Herl’s Bath & Tile Solutions and Apple Discount Drugs.

Award-winning photographer Brice Stump will be there talking about and selling his new book on Skipjacks.  Informative sessions and presentations are planned. Artists will demonstrate how to create their works and there will be entertainment.

• 29th annual Seagull Century, the nationally acclaimed bicycling event that draws thousands of bicycle riders and spectators from all parts of the nation.

Riders will begin and end on the Salisbury University campus. They’ll begin riding between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. and tour the picturesque Eastern Shore on two routes – the 100-mile Assateague Century Tour and 65-mile Princess Anne Metric Tour.

Those who aren’t riding can watch scores of bikers leave and return.

Seagull Century is held rain or shine.

• It’s Reigning Tacos Taco Eating Contest.

The contestant who eats the most tacos in 10 minutes at Reign Restaurant on Civic Avenue will win $500.

The event will begin at 3 p.m.

For those not competing, the taco bar will be open and there will be margarita specials all day. Entertainment is planned and local celebrity judges will be there.

• Halloween Happening at the Salisbury Zoo.

Activities with a Halloween theme for children 10 and younger who don’t like to be scared will begin on Saturday.

Next Saturday, on Oct. 21 from 1 p.m.  to 4 p.m., children can go trick or treating throughout the zoo, play Halloween games, learn about animals, make their way through a hay bale maze and compete in a costume contest.

Advance tickets cost $8 for children and include one free adult ticket. Tickets purchased the day of the event cost $2 for adults and $8 for children.

• Fourth annual Lower Eastern Shore Cornament.

This corn hole competition, to benefit The United Way of the Lower Eastern Shore, is being presented by the Salisbury Elks Lodge No. 817.

Set for Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. at the Elks Lodge, it’s billed as the Shore's largest corn hole tournament.

Cash prizes will be awarded and there will be foods, a tiki bar, entertainment, silent auction and Chinese auction.

The cost is $50 for each team of two. Spectators will be admitted free. Registration will begins at 11 a.m. Call 410-742-5143.

• 20th annual Chesapeake Wildlife Expo, hosted by, and located at, the Ward Museum of Wildfowl Art.

The expo will pay tribute to old decoys while inspiring the carving of new ones.

The museum parking lot and John A. Luetkemeyer Sr. and Thomas F. Mullan Jr. Legacy Center will be transformed into a festive marketplace to  buy, sell and trade antique decoys, collectible hunting items, folk art and outdoor memorabilia.

• 16th annual Women Supporting Women’s Annual Walk for Awareness.

The event is held at WinterPlace Park. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. The ceremony will start at 10 a.m.

Fees are $25 in advance and $30 on the day of the walk and include lunch from Texas Roadhouse, a T-shirt and bottle of water. Pets are welcome. For a $5 registration fee, dogs will each receive a goodies bag, bandanna and all the water they can drink.

Also featured will be a kids’ zone with a bounce house and snow cones, vendor tables and the release of doves. Awards will be given for the team and individual that raise the most money, largest team, best-decorated team and best-decorated dog.

• 2017 Delmarvacade of Bands.

Held at the Wicomico County Stadium, the event will feature Parkside High School and the Parkside Band Boosters presenting high school marching bands from throughout the region.

These bands will fill the Wicomico County Stadium with the sights and sounds of their field shows as bands tune up for championship events.

If it rains, the event will be on Oct. 15.

Bands will compete starting at 5 p.m., with each performing the kind of field show commonly seen at halftime of football games. Each performance will last seven to 12 minutes, and a new band will take the field about every 15 minutes. Admission costs $8.

A program detailing the participants, with a score sheet to keep track of how the bands are doing, will cost $5.

• Good Beer Festival at Pemberton Historical Park.

This eighth annual event, hosted by Wicomico County Recreation, Parks & Tourism and co-sponsored by Salisbury Independent, will be held Saturday and Sunday from 12:30 to 6:30 p.m. each day.

There will be more than 80 craft brews, live music, food and craft vendors, Carni Beer Games and a Sports Zone.

Tasting tickets include a 3-ounce glass and as many samples as one can responsibly consume.

Early bird tickets are available and cost $25. Regular tickets cost $35. Non-tasting tickets are also available; early bird non-tasting tickets cost $5 and regular non-tasting tickets cost $10.
