Get ready to find some bargains. Wicomico Recreation’s Indoor Community Yard Sale is this Saturday, Jan. 13, at the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center.

The yard sale will run from 7 a.m. to noon; admission for shoppers is $2 per person. Children younger than 12 are admitted free when accompanied by an adult.

“With hundreds of tables here at the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center, you’re sure to find some unique items,” said Vanessa Junkin of Wicomico County Recreation, Parks & Tourism.

For people interested in selling items, spots are filling up, but there are still some spaces remaining. Reservations for table and booth rentals can be made, first-come, first-served, at the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center Box Office, online at WicomicoCivicCenter.org, or by phone at 410-548-4911.

Table rentals are $15 and booths are $40 for a 10-foot space including three tables. Tables and booths must be reserved by Friday at 6 p.m. Setup for sellers will begin at 4 a.m. the morning of the sale.

Nabb Center to host quilting exhibit

For generations, quilts have been synonymous with warmth, comfort and the feeling of home.

At Salisbury University’s Edward H. Nabb Research Center for Delmarva History and Culture, every quilt has a story to tell.

The center hosts the exhibit “For the Love of Quilting: Modern Quilts of the Eastern Shore,” featuring quilts made by local guilds and church groups, Jan. 29 through May 31 at its G. Ray Thompson Gallery in the Patricia R. Guerrieri Academic Commons.

The display follows last semester’s exhibit, “Piecing It All Together: Quilts of the Eastern Shore,” which featured historical quilts from the center’s collection.

Quilts in the new exhibit display a range of techniques patterns and purpose. Some were created as works of art, others made from collected scraps and sewn for families in need.

MAC Inc. spaghetti dinner is Jan. 27

Tickets are on sale for a spaghetti dinner, to be held Saturday, Jan. 27, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at Meuse VFW Post 194 on East William Street in Salisbury.

The menu will feature spaghetti with meat sauce, salad bar, garlic bread, beverage and dessert. Tickets are $10 and are on sale in advance; a limited number of tickets will be on sale at the door. Carry-outs will be available from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Also planned are a 50/50 raffle, and raffles featuring a Super Bowl Basket, Sweetheart Basket and Weekend in Ocean City Basket. Raffle tickets are on sale at MAC, at the main reception desk.

Proceeds will benefit MAC Inc. Wellness Center scholarships.

Registration under way for St. Paddy’s Day run/walk

Registration is now under way for the 19th Annual St. Paddy’s Day 5K Run/2-Mile Walk, to be held Saturday, March 10, 2018, at the Salisbury Elks Lodge.

The scenic course will wind through the Salisbury zoo and park.

The theme of the run/walk is “Racing For a Reason.” All proceeds will support MAC, Inc., programs and services for those living with Alzheimer’s Disease and other memory impairments, and their family members and caregivers.

Check-in and late registration will begin at 2 p.m.; the run/walk will step off at 3 p.m. The cost is $25 for walkers; $25 for runners in advance and $35 the day of the race.

Online registration will close at 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, March 7. In addition, mail-in registration must be postmarked by March 7. The first 200 registrants are guaranteed an event T-shirt.

No dogs are allowed in the zoo portion of the 5K route.

Overall awards will be presented to the top three male and female finishers; awards also will be presented to the top three finishers in the various age divisions.

An awards party following the race is free to registered participants; guests can attend the after-party for $5, $15 for families of three or more, and children under age 5 will be admitted to the party free. The party will feature food, door prizes, a 50/50 raffle and auction.

Delmar VFW Porkchop Dinner is Friday evening

The public is once again invited to join the Delmar VFW Auxiliary for a Grilled Pork Chop Dinner on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the VFW Post, 200 West State St. in Delmar.

The menu will include a savory large grilled pork chop, a tossed salad with choice of dressings, a baked potato with butter and/or sour cream, succotash, and a dinner roll, all for only $12. Desserts will also be available.

SU music school offering playing lessons

Want to learn to play a musical instrument? Salisbury University can help.

PRESTO, the Preparatory School of Music at SU, is seeking students of all ages and skill levels for its spring 2018 sessions, beginning in early February. Private instruction is available in strings (violin, viola, cello and bass), piano, voice, guitar, and most orchestral and band instruments.

Individual lessons begin the week of Feb. 5. Students participate in 12 weekly sessions each semester, culminating in a student recital on Tuesday, May 15, in the Great Hall of Holloway Hall.

Cost for private lessons is $330 per 12-week semester for a 30 minute-per-week lesson with a professional teacher. Half-hour sessions with student teachers are available for $264 per semester. Lessons for 45 minutes and one hour also are available.

Lessons are offered weekday afternoons from Monday-Friday and Saturday mornings -- all by appointment. Except for piano, students are required to bring their own instruments.

SU also offers PRESTO Plus adult group piano lessons and launching this semester, an adult group guitar and an adult group theatre class. All PRESTO programs are sponsored by the University’s Center for Extended and Lifelong Learning.

Registration now open for karate program

The next session of Wicomico County Recreation & Parks’ karate program is coming up, and registration is open now.

Sensei David Doran teaches the GoJu style karate classes, which take place in the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center’s Da Nang Rooms. The January session began Monday. Classes are Monday and Wednesday evenings, and new sessions will normally begin on the first Monday of each month, except in January and September this year.

A class for boys and girls ages 4-6 will be from 5:30 to 6 p.m., and beginner/white belt participants ages 7-12 will follow from 6 to 7 p.m. There is also an advanced/yellow belt class for kids ages 7-12 who have tested out of the beginner class, which will be held from 7 to 8 p.m.

The program fee for each month’s session is $40 per person for ages 4-6 and $55 per person for ages 7-12. The first uniform is included; additional uniforms can be purchased for $10 each. Beginning with the January session, a late fee of $10 will be in effect once the session begins. Registration closes after the first week of class.

Celestial Art Show to be held at Library

Wicomico Public Libraries will host a Celestial Art Show at the Downtown Library from Feb. 2 through Feb. 23.

Artists of all ages may submit an original 2D mixed media piece or photograph to participate in the Celestial Art Contest.  All work must apply to the Moon, Stars, and Planets theme. Prizes will be awarded to the top submissions in the following four categories: 2D mixed media grades K-6, 2D mixed media grades 7-12, 2D mixed media adults 18 and over and photography.  Submissions will be accepted at all Library locations from through Jan. 15.

Local artists and members of the science community will be judging the contest, and winners will be revealed at a reception on Feb. 2 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Wicomico Public Libraries Downtown Branch.

This program is made possible through a grant received from the NASA@ My Library project which is led by the National Center for Interactive Learning at the Space Science Institute. Chess tournaments return Feb. 23-24

Be the first to shout "Checkmate!" at Wicomico Recreation's annual youth and adult chess tournaments at the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center. The youth tournament is Friday, Feb. 23, followed by the adult tournament on Saturday, Feb. 24.

Play will begin for the youth tournament, for ages 5-18, at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 23. Registration is $7 in advance or $12 at the door, with day-of registration starting at 5 p.m. Youth players are guaranteed four matches, and there will be multiple age divisions.

Play will begin for the adult tournament, for ages 19 and older, at 8:30 a.m. Feb. 24. Registration is $12 in advance or $17 at the door, with day-of registration starting at 8 a.m. Adult players are guaranteed three matches, and there will be rated and unrated divisions.

“The youth and adult chess tournaments are a great opportunity for players to challenge themselves against others in a fun environment,” said Vanessa Junkin, assistant director of marketing and public relations for Wicomico County Recreation, Parks & Tourism.

Players are encouraged to bring their own chess sets and clocks. Awards will be given to first, second and third place winners. The tournaments are held in the Civic Center’s Da Nang Rooms.

Registration now open for  volleyball skills training

Youth from elementary through high school can learn or improve upon their volleyball skills through the Eastern Shore Elite Volleyball Academy Instructional Program.

The program, which offers the opportunity to learn basic volleyball fundamentals and skills in a fun, noncompetitive environment, is open for registration through Feb. 2.

The program will take place Tuesday nights from Feb. 6 through March 27 at the Glen T. Robinson Community Center, located at 28053 Rockawalkin Ridge Road in Salisbury, with a different time slot for each division.

Division I is for boys and girls in grades one through three and begins at 5:30 p.m. Division II is for boys and girls in grades four through six and begins at 6:15 p.m.

Division III is perfect for middle and high school students new to the sport of volleyball, and it’s open to boys and girls in grades seven through 10 and returning sixth-grade students. This division begins at 7 p.m.

Division IV, formerly the Practice Squad, is for girls in grades nine through 12 who have played JV or varsity volleyball, and it begins at 7:45 p.m.

The cost per player is $60. Coach Chris Emge directs the program, and all participants will receive a T-shirt.

Monster Trucks in Salisbury Jan. 26-27

There will be three shows: Friday, Jan. 26, at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, Jan. 27, at 1 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

The event features monster trucks Ghost Ryder, Equalizer, Buck Shot, Shockwave, Be Ware, Girl Power and Hot Tamale in several different competitions including racing, a wheelie contest and a freestyle car crushing contest.

There will be a monster ride truck on site for attendees interested in seeing the race course from the seat of a real monster truck. There is an additional charge, but the ride is incredible.

Local drivers looking to get in on the action have the opportunity to compete in the Tuff Truck Races. Drivers must be at least 18 years old and have a legal driver’s license. To register, call the Checkered Flag Productions office at 940-683-4742 Monday-Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

New this year, the event’s Kid Zone is a special area for children featuring balloon artists, a place to play with toy monster trucks and the opportunity to race in the Power Wheels races. The races are open to kids ages 4-9 years old. To participate in the races, kids must have their own racer, 6 volt or 12 volt with no performance mods, as well as safety wear. There is a limited amount of racers allowed; call 940-683-4742 to hold your space.

VIP ticket holders can go down on the floor, meet the drivers and see the trucks up close prior to each event.
