Ben’s Red Swings Cleanup Day is Sunday

Ben’s Red Swings Cleanup Day will be held Sunday from 9 a.m. to noon at the swings in Salisbury City Park.

Volunteers of all ages are needed. Please bring brooms, shovels, pitchforks, rakes and wheelbarrows. Please label all tools.

Volunteer hours available for middle and high school students. There will be coffee, hot chocolate, donuts and bagels provided.

Poplar Hill to host Tea With Santa

Come to Poplar Hill Mansion for “Tea With Santa” on Saturday, Dec. 9, from 1 to 4 p.m..

Visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus and enjoy peppermint tea, served from our 1911 silver tea service, as well as raspberry punch and cookies.

Poplar Hill Mansion is fully decorated for the holiday season, including floral arrangements throughout the first floor from the Four Seasons Garden Club, a Christmas Tree on the second floor with over 1,500 ornaments, Village Layout, and a Nutcracker Nursery with over 100 nutcrackers.

The event is free, but photos with Santa are $5 per mailing address and donations are welcome with all proceeds go towards the preservation of Salisbury's Oldest House, Poplar Hill Mansion.

Allen country breakfast is Dec. 2

The Allen Historical Society presents a hearty country breakfast and a visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus on Saturday, Dec. 2, from 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the Allen Community Hall on Collins Wharf Road in Eden.

The breakfast will include three kinds of pancakes (plain, blueberry, and Christmas M&M’s), scrambled eggs, bacon, homefries, fruit, juices, beverages and more.

Santa and Mrs. Claus will be available to children of all ages throughout the breakfast.

The breakfast is $7 for adults, $5 for children 6 to 12; under 6 free.

Proceeds will benefit all the activities of the Allen Historical Society, especially the continuing repairs to the historic Huffington-Pollitt House in Allen, which is to become a museum dedicated to area history.

Mardela Springs tour set for Sunday, Dec. 10

The annual Historical Walking Tour of Mardela Springs has a new date this year: Sunday Dec. 10.

The joint efforts of the town's two historical societies and the Volunteer Fire Company will welcome visitors to the historical tour in the quaint town of Mardela Springs.  The title this year is "Christmas at Barren Creek Springs."

Since 2006, this group's goal is to recall the simpler ways of holiday life, enjoy friendships, happy times, and listening to the music of the holidays.  

A parade has been added to kick off the event. Those interested in participating should contact Donna Short at donnadshort@aol.com. The parade will begin at 3:30 p.m. at Main Street and Spring Grove Road. Everyone should be to the line up point by 3 p.m. to be placed in the parade.  Following the parade at the firehouse there will be a short dedication for their new addition.  

There will be beautiful decorations, horse drawn wagon rides, musicians, entertainment, singers, and other displays to enjoy.  Vendors will be set up at the firehouse with Santa next to his decorated firehouse .

Food will also be sold at several locations that will include Oyster sandwiches, homemade soups, French fries, chicken tenders,  bake goods and hot and cold beverages.  

Bring a flashlight to walk the tour route or hitch a ride on the tram. This event is free. Donations are accepted.

Whitehaven Christmas Bazaar is Dec. 2

The annual Whitehaven Christmas Bazaar will be held Saturday, Dec. 2 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the historic schoolhouse in Whitehaven.

The traditional bazaar will feature plenty of delicious food, including scrapple sandwiches, pulled pork, and locally prepared soups, chili, baked goods, and spiced tea. Santa will be in attendance! Items for sale will include local arts and crafts, poinsettias and greenery, holiday decorations, "Santa's bargain shop," and more.

The annual bazaar is an important fundraiser for the Whitehaven Heritage Association, which preserves the history of this beautiful village and maintains both the schoolhouse and the historic church. The website is whitehavenheritage.org.

Reading auditions for ‘The Amendments” to be held Nov. 29

Auditions for the public reading of a new play, “The Amendments” by Richard Culver, will be held Wednesday, Nov. 29, from 7 to 9 p.m. in Salisbury University’s Fulton Hall Room 203.

The reading will be Saturday, February 10, at 8 p.m. and Sunday, February 11, at 2 p.m., in the Fulton Hall Black Box Theatre, as part of the SU Theatre season.

Auditions are open to all community members. Auditioners are asked to prepare a reading from a play or piece of literature which they like. It need not be memorized.

For those wishing to do a selection from, “The Amendments,” a script is on reserve at the SU Theatre Box Office in Fulton Hall, and the library circulation desk in the Guerrieri Academic Commons. Audition forms will be available at the box office and at auditions.

The play’s characters include traditional college-age students as well as Gen Xers and Baby Boomers.

The story focuses on Margaret, a recovering alcoholic who works at a university. She fights to stay sober when a close friend, who is dying, asks her to takes over the teaching of one of his classes.  The play looks at the possibility of change for those whose lives are shaped by addiction.

Nursing home’s Holiday Bazaar is Dec. 2

Wicomico Nursing Home is holding its annual Holiday Bazaar on Saturday, Dec. 2, 2017.

There will be raffles, door prizes, vendors, crafts made by residents, and yard sale and bake sale tables.

The hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wicomico Nursing Home is located at 900 Booth St. in Salisbury.

Festival of Harmony is Dec. 3 at Wicomico Presbyterian

The Ocean Bay Chorus of Sweet Adelines will present their 14th annual "Christmas Festival of Harmony, "Joy to the World," on Sunday, Dec. 3, at 2 p.m., at the Langeler Educational Building of the Wicomico Presbyterian Church in Salisbury.

Guests will include local in-chapter quartets. Under the direction of Sharon Ehrisman, this year's event promises to welcome in the spirit of the season with traditional carols, contemporary canticles and poignant classics.

There will also be a silent auction and light refreshments.  Tickets are $10 donation at the door or from an Ocean Bay member.
