The children's carousel that has been a fixture at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium for two decades will be donated to the Hebron Volunteer Fire Department for refurbishing and use at the annual Hebron Carnival.

As plans continue for a 360-degree concourse to be built around Perdue Stadium, the carousel has been removed.

The familiar fixture will be donated to the Hebron Volunteer Fire Department for refurbishing and use at the annual Hebron carnival and a new concrete pad, where the carousel sat, will be laid.

“We’re continuing to renovate areas of the stadium and the pad. That pad has been deteriorating over the last 20-something years it’s existed,” Chris Bitters, manager of the stadium, said this week.

“The concrete pad has to be completely torn up and redone. The carousel is just old. We will replace it with things in that area for kids that will be enjoyable. We’ll have inflatables out there, five or six inflatables. I’m sure kids liked the carousel. It’s more that the carousel is almost 25 years old,” Bitters said.

The 2018 Shorebirds season began April 5 and will continue, with 70 home games, until Aug. 30.

Bitters said the promotional schedule for fans this year will be “a lot of fun with exciting things for baseball fans and families.” Fireworks are planned on Saturdays and there will be Star Wars Night in May and a new Kids Club program. See shorebirds.com.

Plans are for the concourse to encircle the stadium by the 2019 season. Now, fans can only go as far as mid-left field in the viewing area to watch the game.
