State Delegate Sheree Sample-Hughes has been named speaker pro tem by Maryland Speaker of the House Adrienne Jones.
The speaker pro tem post is among the most senior in the Maryland House of Delegates.
Sample-Hughes, who represents parts of Wicomico and Dorchester counties in District 37A, is the only Democrat and the only African American from the Shore serving in the House of Delegates.
As speaker pro tem, Sample-Hughes will have the responsibility of leading the House during floor sessions when Jones is absent.
Sample-Hughes served on the Wicomico County Council from 2006 to 2014. She was first elected to the House of Delegates in 2014.
Jones was unanimously elected speaker in May following the April death of Speaker Michael E. Busch.
The next session of the General Assembly starts on Jan. 8.
