Former Salisbury City Councilwoman Shanie Shields is seeking a return to elected office, filing for a seat on the Wicomico County Council.
Shields has filed as a Democrat and will challenge Amber Green in the Democratic primary for the District 1 seat.
Currently held by Ernie Davis, District 1 is the county’s minority-majority district and includes west Salisbury and northwestern portions of Wicomico.
Davis is giving up his seat to run for County Executive.
Shields was a longtime City Council member, before being defeated in 2015 by April Jackson. Green is Executive Director of the Fenix Youth Project.
Megan Outten of Salisbury has also joined the race for County Council, filing as a Democrat for one of two at-large seats.
Five other people are already vying for the county-wide district: Democrat Bradley Gillis, and Republicans John Cannon, Katherine Jones, Dutch Schwemlein and James Winn.
Two Republican council incumbents – three-term member Larry Dodd in District 3 and four-term member Joe Holloway in District 5 – are facing primary opponents.
Shane T. Baker of Willards is a Republican seeking the District 3 seat; Republican AJ Angello has filed for the District 5 seat.
In District 4, incumbent Democrat Josh Hastings is the only filed candidate.
Meanwhile, the battle for two available at-large positions on the Wicomico Board of Education is receiving intense interest. School board elections are non-partisan
Seven people have filed so far for two at-large seats. Incumbents Don Fitzgerald and Michael G. Murray have filed, as have George M. Demko, Bonnie H. Ennis, Kristin N. Hazel, Aaron Guy and Darren J. Lombardo.
In the school District 1, Luc Angelot of Salisbury has filed, as has incumbent Allen C. Brown of Salisbury.
In District 2, Fred Connolly of Salisbury and Karin Miller of Salisbury have filed, as has incumbent Gene Malone, who serves as the board’s chairman.
In District 3, incumbent Tonya Laird Lewis of Willards now has a challenger – Susan W. Beauchamp of Salisbury.
In a repeat of 2018’s election, incumbent Ann Brittingham Suthowski of Salisbury will face David Plotts of Salisbury in District 4.
In District 5, Jay Blank of Salisbury has filed, as has incumbent John Palmer of Delmar.
Election officials recently extended the filing deadline to Tuesday, March 22, so there is ample time for more contenders to step forward.
The Republican and Democratic primary contests will be held Tuesday, June 28.
