Seward Maxwell Mende Sr.

CAMBRIDGE - Seward Maxwell Mende Sr., 90 of Cambridge, passed away on Saturday Jan. 5, 2008, at the Salisbury Nursing Home. He was born at Sewards on May 23, 1917 and was a son of the late Eric and Clarissa Radcliff Seward Mende.

Mr. Mende attended schools in Cambridge. On Dec. 25, 1937 he was married to the former Kathleen Parker. He had worked at Kerr McGee as a plant supervisor for 27 years. Mr. Mende was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Cambridge and was also an honorary member of Rescue Fire Co. Inc. in Cambridge, and was an ardent fisherman and also enjoyed duck carving and made canes. Mr. Mende was also known locally for his roses. He had been in failing health for two years and had been at the Salisbury Nursing Home for the past two years where he passed away early Saturday morning.

Survivors include his wife of 70 years Kathleen P. Mende of Cambridge, one daughter Bonnie Elliott and her husband Daniel Elliott, Sr., of Edgewater, one son Seward M. Mende, Jr. and his wife Linda J. Mende of Salisbury, one granddaughter Christa Sensi of Salisbury, three grandsons Daniel Elliott, Jr., of Linthicum, Gregory Elliott of West Virginia and Robert Elliott of Davidsonville. He is also survived by four great grandchildren. He is also survived by one brother James T. Mende of Linthicum and several nephews. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Mary Louise Spies, Jeanne Halpern and Margaret M. Hughes and two brothers Eric Mende and Guilford Mende.

A memorial service will be held on 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with the Rev. Douglas M. Ridley officiating. Interment will take place at East New Market Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Grace United Methodist Church, 501 Race St., Cambridge.

The family will receive friends during the hour before the service.
