Local veterans of the armed services will be honored during several Veterans Day programs and events in Salisbury.

Veterans Day is Monday, Nov. 11.

American Legion

American Legion Wicomico Post 64 will host its Veterans Day program and dinner this Sunday, Nov. 10, from 3 to 5 p.m.

Two longtime post members, Clarence E. Meyer and Russell Franklin, will be honored as Outstanding Legionnaires, and a statue and plaques will be unveiled, according to event organizer Barbara Wharton.

After the program, the post will host an early bird dinner for $5 per person. The public is invited. The post is located at 1109 Legion Road, Salisbury.

Civic Center event

The Wicomico County War Memorial Committee invites the community to join in honoring military veterans at a ceremony on Monday, Nov. 11, at 11 a.m.

The Veterans Day Ceremony will take place at the Wicomico War Veterans’ Memorial, located directly in front of the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center at 500 Glen Ave. in Salisbury. 

The ceremony, which is coordinated by the Wicomico County War Memorial Committee, includes patriotic music, prayer and remembrance to honor all veterans. Veterans Day is set aside to thank and honor living veterans who served honorably in the military, in wartime or peacetime.

In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held inside, in the Civic Center’s Midway Room.

The Wicomico War Veterans’ Memorial at the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center is a fitting location for this ceremony, as the Civic Center is a war memorial to all veterans. At the outside memorial, flags from each service branch, along with United States, Maryland, Wicomico County and POW-MIA flags, proudly fly over a brick wall displaying plaques with the names of Wicomico County’s fallen veterans from World War II and beyond.

SU Veterans Day

The next day, Monday, Nov. 11, Salisbury University will host is annual Veterans Day ceremony at 2 p.m. in the Great Hall of Holloway Hall.

The event includes a presentation of colors by the SU ROTC and music by the SU Chorale, directed by Dr. William Folger, co-chair of the Music, Theatre and Dance Department.

Speakers include SU President Charles Wight, Dean of the Samuel W. and Marilyn C. Seidel School of Education and Air Force veteran Laurie Henry, Salisbury Mayor Jake Day, SU Student and Air Force veteran Caleb Mayers.

A reception follows in the Holloway Hall Social Room.

Free flu shots

In honor of Veterans Day and in appreciation for the service to our nation by the veterans of Delmarva, Peninsula Regional Medical Center will offer free flu shots to all veterans and their spouses.

The free flu shots will be provided on Monday, November 11, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. aboard PRMC’s Wagner Wellness Van, which will be located in a PRMC parking lot on the “S Curve” of business Route 13 directly across from the Delmarva Surgery Center.  Each veteran and their spouse who participate will also receive a PRMC gift.

Rotary Club

The Rotary Club of Salisbury will offer a presentation on Thursday, Nov. 7, on the establishment of the groups created to honor war veterans.

Veterans Day, as we know it, was declared as a Day of Remembrance in 1919 and named Armistice Day.  Veterans date back from the American Revolution to today, but it was in 1919 that those who served our country were first recognized.

World War I ended in November 1918, and the American Legion was established in March 1919, paving the way for other groups created to support our veterans.

George Vickers and Dr. Stephen Gehnrich will present on the history of veterans groups, their missions and what they have accomplished over the past 100 years. 

Their presentation will give a taste of the history of organizations like the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and hopefully inspire further research for those in attendance.

The Rotary Club of Salisbury meets every Thursday at 6 p.m. in the Rotary Scout and Community Center at 1715 Riverside Drive in Salisbury.
