EASTON - Roman M. Roberts, 76, a retired sergeant of the U.S. Army, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2007, at the Talbot Hospice House.

He was born and raised in St. Michaels. He was a 1948 graduate of Robert Russa Moton High School. Throughout elementary to senior high school Mr. Roberts was an avid sportsman, actively playing in every soccer game. After graduating from high school he enlisted in the Army in July of the same year. For the next several years he traveled the world extensively, completing several assignments on behalf of the government.

After several years of service he retired from the military. Mr. Roberts then went onto work for the U.S. Postal Service for the next 21 years. Throughout his life he served the government a total of 43 years.

He received such distinguished awards as: Good Conduct Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Korean Service Medal (4 Bs Service Star), National Defense Service Medal, Merit Unit Citation Marksman (Rifle M-14).

He was also a bus driver for the Talbot County School System, from which he retired.

During Mr. Roberts' youth he attended Union United Methodist Church in St. Michaels. After marrying Ethel Lucille Fountain he joined Asbury United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and The Odd Fellows Lodge. He was also an active member of the Asbury United Methodist Church. He worked with the Be A Star Program. He was also awarded the Umoja (Unity) Certificate.

Mr. Roberts, was affectionately known as "Sonny Boy."

He is survived by Ella Jane Haythe, a companion of 11 years; one sister, Pearl C. Palmer, and play Sister, Sara Jane Bass, both of Baltimore; two daughters, Tammy I. Roberts of Easton and Kimberly E. Roberts of Randallstown; one granddaughter, Shawana M. Roberts of Bethlehem, Pa.; one great-grandson, Adrean J'taime Pizarro of Bethlehem, Pa.; four nieces, Sharon & Karen Caldwell, both of Easton, Hope Carter of Hurlock and Angelette Bazemore of Baltimore and a number of other relatives; two nephews, Andre and Marcus Bazemore of Baltimore.

Ethel L. Roberts, Mr. Robert's wife of 37 years, predeceased him in 1993.

The family received visitors on Tuesday, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Bennie Smith Funeral Home, 426 East Dover St.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. today at Asbury United Methodist Church. Burial will follow the service at the Maryland Veterans' Cemetery in Hurlock.
