A 37-year-old Sysco Foods executive with deep community ties was killed while jogging Friday night on Meadow Bridge Road in Fruitland, south of the Route 13 Bypass.

The Wicomico Sheriff’s office said Robert Thomas Schultheis was struck by a pickup truck driven by Brent M. Taylor of Eden. The accident occurred at about 7:30 p.m.

This collision is being investigated by the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office Collision Reconstruction Unit. Anyone who may have witnessed this incident or has information regarding it is asked to contact the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office at 410-548-4891.

Shultheis was well known locally as an athlete who participated in running and cycling event. A 2000 graduate of Salisbury University, he was a three-term member of the Alumni Association’s Board of Directors, where he served as president for two terms.

On Saturday, SU President Dr. Janet Dudley-Eshbach released a statement in which she called Schultheis’ loss "devastating."

Said Dudley-Eshbach: "From regularly attending SU events, to giving back by generously naming a conference room in the Perdue School of Business, to presenting congratulatory gifts from the association to thousands of fellow graduates as they crossed the commencement stage, he has been a dedicated and loyal friend to this university.

"He loved SU and everyone knew it. Rob had a gift for making others feel valued and special; his warm and friendly presence will be missed," she said.

In 2013, Schultheis was honored with the Alumni Leadership Award for his "selfless volunteerism."
