Rob McDonald, longtime golf pro at Glen Riddle Golf Club in Berlin, was introduced this week as the Head Professional at Green Hill Country Club in Quantico.

McDonald, who left his resort-area post last month after a seven-year stint, succeeds Mike Callendar, who departed Wicomico County’s venerable golf and country club last fall.

“Green Hill is a wonderful traditional course and club,” said McDonald, “and I'm looking forward to getting started there.”

The new head pro, 55, and a native of Rosedale, Md., was formally introduced to the club membership at a club event Wednesday night.

McDonald has 30 years experience in teaching golf to all levels of players. From beginning golfers, to the physically challenged, to scratch players, he is often lauded for teaching golf in a manner that makes it fun to learn, while also bringing an understanding of the concepts and mechanics of the swing to each student.

A longtime private facility, Green Hill converted to a semi-private club last year. The club barely weathered the recession, and a collective of members purchased the Whitehaven Road tract, forming a new ownership group.

Built in 1927, the club was a 9-hole facility until 1955, when another nine were added to create a 6,929-yard par 72 course. The club is on the Wicomico River, 6 miles southwest of Salisbury.

Over the years, it has been the scene of some of the great local golfing events.
