A 35-year-old man has been charged with the murder of the Pemberton Drive man killed April 16, according to Maryland State Police.

The Wicomico County Grand Jury issued an indictment charging Paul A. Tatem of Quantico with first and second- degree murder.

He is accused of killing Donald G. Mariner, 72, who was found dead in his home in the 27000 block of Pemberton Drive.

Police said Mariner and his housemate, a 50-year-old man, had both been assaulted after someone entered the house during a home invasion.

Mariner was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy determined he died from blunt force injuries. The other victim survived.

Tatem was also charged with two counts of armed robbery, two counts of robbery, two counts of first and second-degree assault, attempted first and second-degree murder, first-degree burglary, theft between $1,000 and $10,000, two counts of wearing-carrying a dangerous weapon with intent to injure, unlawful taking of a motor vehicle and felon in possession of a firearm, police said.

The indictment ordered Tatem held without bond in the Wicomico County Detention Center.

Police said Maryland State Police Homicide Unit investigators served the indictment on Tatem on Tuesday at the detention center.

Tatem was originally arrested in the Salisbury area by members of the Maryland State Apprehension Team on July 1, on a parole retake warrant and a theft warrant, police said. He has been in the detention center without bond since then.

The Maryland State Police Homicide Unit investigation developed evidence and information that was presented to the Wicomico County Grand Jury, with the assistance of the Wicomico County state’s attorney’s office.

The grand jury issued the indictment charging Tatem with Mariner’s murder and the assault of the other victim.

Men charged with theft, conspiracy

Two Delaware residents were charged after a traffic stop July 21, according to Salisbury City Police.

Woodrow Lee Manning Jr., 50, of Selbyville, was charged with theft of less than $1,000, conspiracy to commit theft and theft scheme of less than $1,000, police said.

Kelly Amber Moore, 46, of Frankford, was charged with theft of less than $1,000, conspiracy to commit theft and theft scheme of less than $1,000, police said.

Following the traffic stop, in the Mitchell Road area, an investigation revealed Moore was wanted on an outstanding arrest warrant for theft, police said.

Manning was also wanted on an outstanding arrest warrant for theft, police said.

Police said they discovered sales receipts and gift cards for Wal-Mart, Lowes, and Home Depot and learned someone was obtaining discarded sales receipts, entering the businesses and stealing items identified on the sales receipts.

He or she would then return to the business, with the stolen product and sales receipt, and return the items for profit, police said.

They said they investigation is continuing.

Missing man found uninjured after search

An 18-year-old Salisbury man was found after being reported missing by his family at 11:30 p.m. July 23, according to Salisbury City Police.

Police said they responded to the 500 block of Emory Court after a report that Robert Christopher Odell had fought with family members.

Threats were made to harm himself and family members, police said.

They said Odell was last seen in a  wooded area near Beaglin Park and North Park drives.

Salisbury Police searched with K-9 units and a helicopter from the Maryland State Police Aviation Unit, police said.

Odell was found on July 24 uninjured, police said.

National Night Out Event is Tuesday

National Night Out 2014 will be at Salisbury City Park, by the bandstand, Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m.

Public service equipment will be on display and there will be a pet parade, according to a press release issued by the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office.

Registered participants can win prizes donated by local businesses. Registration starts at 4:30 p.m. at the Wicomico County Humane Society table.

Registered pet owners will each receive a free drink and a prize.

Categories will include best owner look alike, cutest dog and top hero dog.

Also featured will be free food, snow cones, music, games and activities.

Those attending should take a chair to watch competitions between the fire department and police department.

Raffle prizes include a bicycle and book bag with supplies.

Nonperishable food items will be collected for the Maryland Food Bank.

Fire causes $150,000 in damages

Nobody was injured in an apartment building fire the morning of July 26, according to the Salisbury Fire Marshal’s Office.

The fire caused $150,000 damage to the building, at 924 S. Division Street, and $30,000 damage to contents, according to the fire marshal’s office.

Seven occupants were displaced and aided by the American Red Cross, according to the fire marshal’s office.

The structure is owned by Jaime Willey and occupied by Jermaine Woolford.

Fire departments from Salisbury 16, 1 and 2 and the Fruitland Fire Department responded. It took 40 firefighters one hour to control the fire, which was discovered by an occupant.

It started in a bedroom in Apartment No. 5, according to the fire marshal’s office. The preliminary cause was accidental and electrical.

Man charged in theft of coins

A 29-year-old Salisbury man was charged with theft under $1,000 on July 26 after a jar of coins was reported missing from a home in Salisbury, according to the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office.

Randy Allen Knupp was charged after the incident, on the 32000 block of Johnson Road, after the owner of a home reported someone stole the coins, a deputy said.

The deputy reviewed video surveillance from a nearby store that has a Coin-Star machine and observed a man depositing coins in exchange for cash.

The deputy applied for and obtained a warrant and arrested Knupp.

He was released on personal recognizance, the deputy said.

Man accused of marijuana possession

A 19-year-old Salisbury man was charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute July 27 after a traffic stop, according to the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office.

James P. Hutson was arrested after a deputy stopped a vehicle for an equipment violation on East Isabella Street.

As the deputy approached the car, he said he recognized remnants of marijuana on the passenger side floor. After a search of the vehicle, the deputy located what was identified as marijuana packaged in four plastic bags.

The deputy said based on the packaging and amount observed, he arrested Hutson.

Hutson was in the Wicomico County Detention Center on $20,000 bail, the deputy said.

Woman charged with second-degree assault

A 37-year-old Delmar, Md., woman was in the Wicomico County Detention Center on $25,000 bail after being charged with second-degree assault July 26, according to the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office.

Melinda Ann Pyott was charged after a deputy responded to a report of a fight in the 200 block of Spruce Street in Delmar, a deputy said.

The deputy met with a man who said he had been involved in an argument with a women he lived with and a fight started, the deputy said.

The man said he was punched in the mouth and the deputy said he confirmed signs of the man’s injury.

Man accused of eluding officers in chase

A 23-year-old Delmar, Del., man was charged with fleeing and eluding and related charges July 26 in Sharptown, according to the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office.

Denzel Antonio Brown was arrested after a deputy clocked a vehicle traveling at 94 mph in a 50 mph zone on Laurel Road, heading toward Sharptown, a deputy said.

The deputy said he attempted to chase the speeding vehicle, but lost sight of it, then continued to Sharptown and located the vehicle, which had crashed near the river on Main Street.

The driver was not at the scene but the deputy discovered a man walking into the state police barrack to report he had been involved in an accident in Sharptown.

The deputy arrested Brown and charged him with speeding, attempting to flee and elude, reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident, operating an unregistered vehicle and operating an uninsured vehicle.

He was in the Wicomico County Detention Center on $20,000 bail, the deputy said.

Man charged in connection with fight

A Salisbury man was charged with second-degree assault July 25 after a Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office deputy responded to a fight on Pocahontas Avenue.

Isiah J. Jordan, 25, was arrested after the deputy learned two brothers who live together had an argument that turned physical, and one brother reportedly assaulted the other, the deputy said.

During the investigation, the deputy said he observed signs of injury on the victim.

Jordan was released on his personal recognizance, the deputy said.
