PRMC Drive-In Flu Clinic Thursday and Friday

Posted

Peninsula Regional Medical Center’s “Drive-Thru” Flu Clinic is returning today and Friday at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium at the intersection of Route 50 and Hobbs Road.

Vaccinations will be administered to individuals 13 years of age or older.  A physician’s order is not necessary.

A donation of $15 per vaccination is requested (cash only; exact amount is appreciated) and PRMC, for the first time, will be offering the quadrivalent vaccine this year.

“We chose to offer the quadrivalent flu vaccine for our Drive-Thru Flu Clinic because it’s designed to provide broader protection against the flu,” said Karen Mihalik, RN, Infection Prevention Specialist at PRMC.

“The quadrivalent vaccine, which is more readily available this year than in years past, protects against two influenza type A and two influenza type B viruses.”

Previously flu vaccines were trivalent, and made to protect against two type A viruses but only one type B.   The quadrivalent flu shot, like the trivalent, is still an inactivated vaccine meaning it protects you against the flu but it cannot cause the flu.

PRMC’s Drive-Thru Flu Clinic will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on both days.

Flu vaccinations are encouraged for persons over the age of 65, people with heart or lung disorders, immunosuppressant diseases or diabetes.  Participants are encouraged to wear a short sleeved shirt that will provide easy access to the upper arm.
