Portia Anderson, 92 PHILADELHIA - Portia Anderson, 92 (Nee Miles) of Philadelphia, passed away on Saturday, May 15, 2010, at Vitas Hospice at Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital in Darby, Pa.; born of Crisfield, Md. She attended elementary and high school in Crisfield, Md., graduating as class Valedictorian at each level. She was formerly of Cleveland, Ohio, of Ocean City, N.J. and a resident of Philadelphia, Pa. since 1996. Mrs. Anderson received her bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore in 1938. She earned her Master's Degree in Social Work from Atlanta University. She was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority. She was a Licensed Masters Social Worker and had worked as a director of Social Services for the City of Cleveland, Ohio, for 30 years, retiring in 1973. Mrs. Anderson developed the department of Social Services in Baltimore, Md. She was an avid golfer, Bridge player and a world traveler. Beloved wife of the late Charles Anderson, beloved sister of the late Edith Miles Wilmore Shockley, beloved daughter of the late Howard S. and Cornelia Marguerite Daugherty Miles. She is survived by two sisters, Marizita Miles Grimes and her husband Richard of Ocean City, N.J., Dr. Sarah Miles Woods of Crisfield, Md.; two nieces Clarissa Price of Baltimore, Md., Rita Grimes-Brown of Galloway, N.J.; two great-nieces, Carmen Prices-Bullock of Baltimore, Howard R. Wilmore of Sicklerville, N.J.; two great-nephews, Nicholas and Justin Bullock; and one great-great-niece, Kelly Corrine Bullock. Her funeral service was held on Friday May 21, 2010 at 11 a.m. at God fry Funeral Home, 809 Central Avenue, Ocean City. Burial followed in Seaside Cemetery Palermo, N.J. The family suggests those who desire send memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society, South Jersey Region, 1851 Old Cuthbert Road, Cherry Hill, NJ 08034.
