Salisbury Police are warning residents to lock car doors and remove packages, purses and backpacks, following several thefts from vehicles along College Avenue, from Eastern Shore Drive to Glen Avenue.

Police are also warning to park in well-lighted areas and report suspicious people and activities.

Man injured in Newtown blaze

 A 23-year-old man suffered burns in a house fire at 710 Elizabeth Street in Salisbury April 6, according to the state fire marshal’s office.

The fire began at 11 p.m. in the two-story wooden house, converted into two apartments and owned by GNI Properties, the fire marshal said.

Damage to the structure was $20,000, plus $5,000 in damage to contents.

Salisbury Fire Department from Stations 16, 1 and 2 responded, with the Delmar Volunteer Fire Department. It took 30 firefighters 50 minutes to get the blaze under control, the fire marshal said.

The fire was discovered by the occupant and started in the rear, second-floor porch. It was accidental and caused by the occupant using gasoline to clean automotive parts, the fire marshal said.

The occupant was taken to Peninsula Regional Medical Center and treated for non-life threatening injuries, the fire marshal said.

Man charged with handgun possession

A 20-year-old Salisbury man was in jail on $60,000, charged with possession of handgun by a minor and related charges, according to the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office.

Ramear Omar Wheatley was also charged with illegal possession of a regulated firearm and illegal possession of ammunition  after being arrested at 9:24 p.m. April 4 on Route 13, after the vehicle he was in was seen speeding, a deputy said.

During the stop, the deputy said he identified Wheatley  as a wanted fugitive. Wheatley had been sought since 2013 on an arrest warrant that charged him with assault, the deputy said.

As the deputy took Wheatley into custody, he noticed a blue bag on the floor, where Wheatley was sitting. The deputy  said he discovered a .380 semi-automatic handgun and the  magazine contained five rounds of ammunition.

Wheatley was held on $45,000 bail, plus $15,000 for the arrest warrant, the deputy said.

Sheriff’s deputies make DUI arrest

 A 67-year-old Salisbury man was released upon the issuance of citations pending a future court date after being arrested April 3 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol per se, according to the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office.

Alfred Lee Lofland was arrested at 11:35 p.m. after a deputy stopped a vehicle without its headlights on, the deputy said.

The deputy said he detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage. Based on the odor and physical indicators, the deputy said he began a battery of sobriety tests, then made the arrest. The breath sample measured .17, the deputy said.

City man facing assault charges

 A 51-year-old Salisbury man was released on $50,000 unsecured bond March 25 after being charged with second-degree assault, according to the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office.

John Alex Bononno was charged in the 28000 block of Log Cabin Road in Salisbury following an allegation of assaulting a woman, a deputy said. He said Bononno is accused of pushing a woman into a wall and striking her.

Man facing drug possession charges

 A 55-year-old Snow Hill man was released on personal recognizance after being charged with possession of controlled dangerous substance March 26, according to the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office.

Ronnie L. Collins was arrested at 10:35 p.m. on Calvert Street after a deputy stopped a vehicle for an equipment violation, a deputy said.

The deputy said he discovered the driver’s license had been suspended. Due to the behavior of Collins’ passengers, a sheriff’s office drug K9 team was called to conduct a scan for the  odor of illegal drugs, the deputy said. Following a positive alert and subsequent search, the deputy said he located what was identified as crack cocaine.
