With the goal of attracting thousands, Chris Hagel of Pohanka Salisbury is planning United We Stand, a gathering to make a statement of solidarity.

At 10 a.m. Friday, the community is invited to gather in front of Pohanka Toyota on North Salisbury Boulevard, where drones will be overhead, “in response to our nation’s recent tension involving race and equality.”

“I hope what will happen is, conversations will start,” said Hagel, who credited the Pohanka company for the idea.

“It is time for us to come together,” said the Rev. Mark Thompson, who posted the event on Facebook, prompting readers’ comments such as “a small city with a big heart” and “let’s do it right.”

Those who are willing will record a short “spot,” or commercial to be broadcast later, affirming their unification.

Hagel said he’s hoping the event will attract police officers, pastors, leaders in the community and “everybody from every walk of life.”
