Pittsville woman faces embezzlement charge

The daughter of the Pittsville Town Commissioners president was in jail on $200,000 bail charged with embezzlement, after being arrested May 21.

Carla Merranda Moore, 23, of Pittsville, is charged with embezzling more than $170,000 from the town, according to the Wicomico Bureau of Investigation.

Detectives said in July 2014 they were contacted about results of a town audit that showed a considerable amount of money was missing.

Moore was hired as town bookkeeper in 2012. While she worked for the town, investigators said transactions were made that were not associated with town business.

Investigators said more than $100,000 was taken in June 2012. In 2013, between $1,000 and $10,000 was taken. In September last year,  between $10,000 and $100,000 was taken, they said.

A grand jury was presented with the facts and there was a criminal indictment issued for Moore on five counts of felonious theft.

Moore is the daughter of Denver Moore, president of the Pittsville Town Commission, said a WBI official.
