FT. MYERS, Fla. - Phyllis Gordon Murphy Miller, 80, formerly of Cambridge, died Sept. 11, 2006, at HealthPark Medical Center in Ft. Myers after a four-day illness.
Mrs. Miller was born Oct. 4, 1925, in New York City. She attended elementary and high school in Manchester, N. H. She then went on to Plymouth State Teachers College in Plymouth, N.H. Following her college graduation she attended the University of Pennsylvania where she received her master"s degree.
From 1953 to 1974, taught at Cambridge High School. At that time she was Phyllis Murphy. She taught English, physical education and geography. In addition, she was the sponsor for both the yearbook and the newspaper.
She was a member of Christ Church where she served on the altar guild. She later joined Old Trinity Church. She also was a member of the Dorchester Arts Center and worked on the Dorchester Showcase for several years.
Mrs. Miller was leader of Girl Scout Cadette Troop 212 and senior Troop 61. She was a lifelong member of the Girl Scouts.
Following her retirement from teaching, Mrs. Miller was a food writer for the Tidewater Times. She also taught several writing classes at Chesapeake College.
When she moved to Florida, Mrs. Miller joined All Souls Episcopal Church where she enjoyed helping out in the church"s thrift store.
Her interests included reading, writing, gardening, bridge, painting, crafts, sailing and travel. She was an award-winning cook on both the local and regional levels.
Surviving are her husband, Elmer Miller, whom she married in 1999; one son, W. Edward "Ned" Murphy III of Wahiawa, Hawaii; two daughters, Julie Murphy Jones of Bowie and Margi Murphy Sigler of Tracy"s Landing; one sister, Ruth Seames of Elk Grove, Calif.; and five grandchildren.
She was divorced from William E. Murphy Jr. in 1975.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, at Christ Episcopal Church, 601 Church St., Cambridge. A reception will follow the service.
