New Wicomico superintendent to be formally selected

Posted

Wicomico County’s new superintendent of schools will be announced following a vote scheduled Tuesday night.

The Board of Education has scheduled a special meeting for 7 p.m. in the James M. Bennett Auditorium to complete the superintendent search process. At that time, board members will vote on the candidate selection for Wicomico Superintendent of Schools.

Last week, the three finalists – Dr. Cathy J.  Townsend, Dr. Donna C. Hanlin and Dr. Lorenzo L. Hughes – toured schools, had lunch and conversation with students and met with panels composed of support staff, retirees, business leaders, teachers, parents, community leaders, Central Office administrators, principals and media.

At the sessions, representatives from the Maryland Association of Boards of Education, or MABE, gathered information and will relay it to board of education members. They will consider the information as they make a final determination.

Board members had set a goal of April 1 for choosing a new superintendent.

On July 1, the next superintendent will take over for a four-year period, replacing the current superintendent, Dr. John Fredericksen, who is retiring. Afterward, the contract can be renewed.  The advertised annual starting salary is $175,000.

Townsend is assistant superintendent for administrative services for Wicomico County schools.

Hughes is assistant superintendent for instruction for Dorchester County schools.

Hanlin, formerly school counselor, assistant principal, principal and director of secondary education in Wicomico County, is co-chairwoman and director of assessment and accountability for the Department of Education at Shepherd University.
