One day after police discovered a decomposing body in a shallow grave in Fruitland, a 47-year-old Fruitland man was arrested.

Around 10 p.m. Tuesday, Douglas Harlow was arrested by investigators from the Maryland State Apprehension Team and the Maryland State Police Gang Unit, police said.

He was charged with first and second-degree murder, first-degree assault, reckless endangerment, assault with a deadly weapon and improper disposal of a body, police said.

Harlow was arrested without incident at a trailer park in Salisbury, then transported to the Maryland State Police Salisbury Barrack for processing, police said.

He was taken to the Wicomico County Detention Center, and was waiting to be seen by the District Court Commissioner.

The body was discovered on Monday, in a shallow grave in Fruitland after Fruitland police received a tip, police said.

The name of the victim will be released after next of kin is notified, police said. The body was sent to the medical examiner’s office in Baltimore, where an autopsy will be performed.

On Tuesday, State Police investigators assigned to the Homicide Unit took the lead in the case, with assistance provided by the Criminal Enforcement Division of the Lower Eastern Shore and the Fruitland Police Department, police said.

Police and forensic analysts from the Maryland State Police Forensic Sciences Division were on the scene Tuesday afternoon excavating into the grave, police said. They are continuing to investigate.
