Mother’s Day Reception planned at Poplar Hill

Celebrate your mother a week early at Poplar Hill’s Mother’s Day Reception on Sunday, May, from 1 to 3 p.m.

The hosts will be honoring the founders of Mother’s Day, Julia Ward Howe and Anna Jarvis. Live music featuring Judy Willing, Becky Joseph, and Bill Alexander playing some of mom’s favorites from popular artists of the mid-20th century.

Please note that this is not a formal concert. Limited seating will be available in the mansion. Light refreshments and tea will be served.

This free reception is part of the Music at the Mansion Series, made possible in part by a grant from the Salisbury Wicomico Arts Council, awarded by the Maryland State Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Donations are welcome with all proceeds go toward the preservation of Salisbury's oldest house, Poplar Hill Mansion.

Delmar Auxiliary sponsoring fundraising sales

The Ladies Auxiliary of the Delmar Fire Department will be sponsoring a Sub Sale and also a Geranium Sale, on the same day.

Pick-up times are from 8 a.m. until noon on Saturday, May 12.

The geraniums are in 4.5-inch pots and are selling for $6. Colors available are red, pink, white and lavender.

The subs offered are cold cut and turkey. They are 12-inch subs selling for $8.

GoJu style karate classes begin Monday

Sensei David Doran teaches the GoJu style karate classes, which take place in the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center’s Da Nang Rooms. The May session will begin Monday, May 7. Classes are Monday and Wednesday evenings, and new sessions will normally begin on the first Monday of each month. An exception is the September session.

A class for boys and girls ages 4-6 will be from 5:30 t 6 p.m., and beginner/white belt participants ages 7-12 will follow from 6 to 7 p.m. There is also an advanced/yellow belt class for kids ages 7-12 who have tested out of the beginner class, which is from 7 to 8 p.m.

The program fee for each month’s session is $40 per person for ages 4-6 and $55 per person for ages 7-12. The first uniform is included; additional uniforms can be purchased for $10 each. A late fee of $10 will be in effect once the session begins. Registration closes after the first week of class.

Spring Music Festival continues May 10

The Salisbury University Jazz Ensemble, directed by Jerry Tabor, continues SU’s annual Spring Music Festival, “American Adventures: Music That Inspired a Nation,” 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 10, in Holloway Hall Auditorium.

Members of the EKW Trio, award-winning recording artists David Kikoski (piano), Ben Wolfe (bass) and Donald Edwards (drums) join the ensemble during the performance, at which Tabor debuts several original contemporary jazz compositions.
