A judge blocks Trump's new bid to curb birthright citizenship, citing Supreme Court precedent
SUMMARY: A federal judge has blocked President Donald Trump's latest attempt to prohibit automatic U.S. citizenship at birth. Judge Deborah L. Boardman in Maryland granted a preliminary injunction on Wednesday, stopping the executive order until a class-action lawsuit by immigrant families and advocacy groups is resolved. Birthright citizenship is guaranteed under the 14th Amendment, ratified in 1868. Trump's order aimed to restrict citizenship for children born to certain foreign nationals. The judge said the U.S. Supreme Court already ruled on the issue in June, finding that children in the class action case are citizens at birth. Boardman said Trump's new executive order, issued in August, violated the high court's earlier ruling.

Year 3 for Jayden Daniels could be crucial for both his future and Washington's
SUMMARY: After plummeting from an NFC title game berth to a five-win season, the Washington Commanders hope for a return to the playoffs. Beyond wins and losses, it’s important for quarterback Jayden Daniels to have a solid, healthy season to dismiss comparisons to Robert Griffin III. The problem for the Commanders is that the offensive line being counted on to keep Daniels upright is already having problems. Left tackle Laremy Tunsil went down with a triceps injury. Washington overhauled its defense after only rival Dallas allowed more points in the NFC last season.

Justin Tucker among group that works out for Jets as New York evaluates kickers
SUMMARY: The New York Jets have worked out three kickers, including five-time All-Pro Justin Tucker, as they address questions at the position. Michael Badgley and Joshua Karty also were at the team’s facility, according to the NFL’s transactions wire. This comes after the Jets claimed Blake Grupe off waivers and released Jason Sanders, who struggled in the preseason finale. Sanders was later re-signed to the practice squad. Tucker hasn't kicked since 2024. He was released by Baltimore in 2025 after allegations of inappropriate behavior, which he denies. Tucker is considered one of the best kickers in NFL history.

Ronald Acuña Jr. becomes fastest to 200 homers, 200 steals as Braves beat Nationals 9-0
SUMMARY: Ronald Acuña Jr. hit a three-run homer to become the fastest player in major league history to reach 200 home runs and 200 stolen bases, and the Atlanta Braves beat the Washington Nationals 9-0. Sean Murphy homered for the third time in five games, a three-run shot in the sixth inning that broke a scoreless tie. The game was interrupted by a lengthy rain delay in the fourth. Acuña followed with a drive to left-center in the seventh, his 14th of the season, to make it 6-0. He needed 904 games to reach the 200/200 club. Alfonso Soriano set the previous record at 929 games.

College football coaching changes put Kiffin, Whittingham, Sumrall and others in new places
SUMMARY: College football’s coaching carousel was a doozy last winter, putting some new faces in new places. That ride included Lane Kiffin’s closely watched move from Ole Miss to LSU. A slew of schools were desperate to find the right man to help them win games and generate revenue for athletic departments that have a lot of bills to pay in the new era of college athletics. Michigan coach Sherrone Moore’s firing and arrest created a job opening at Michigan and former Utah coach Kyle Whittingham took it, shortly after stepping down at Utah.

The Cowboys are getting preseason buzz again. One handicapper says this time feels different
SUMMARY: The Dallas Cowboys always get plenty of attention, but this year some bookmakers think they could make some noise in the NFC East. Longtime handicapper Bruce Marshall says the division sets up well for “America's Team” as well as the New York Giants under new coach John Harbaugh. Depending on the sportsbook, the Cowboys have odds of 20-1 to 25-1 to win the Super Bowl. The Los Angeles Rams remain consensus favorites to win the Super Bowl at 5-1 after they brought in defensive stars Myles Garrett and Aaron Donald. Other teams among the favorites include the Bills, Ravens and defending champion Seahawks.

Ravens GM says team is still waiting on NFL investigation of Rashod Bateman's arrest
SUMMARY: Baltimore Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta says the team is still waiting on the NFL’s investigation into receiver Rashod Bateman’s arrest earlier this offseason. Bateman was taken into custody in June in Georgia on suspicion of family violence battery and reckless conduct, both misdemeanors, and criminal damage to property, a felony. DeCosta spoke with reporters Wednesday. That's a normal occurrence shortly before the start of the season. In addition to Bateman’s legal issues, he also addressed the team’s kicking situation. Baltimore added Jake Moody to the practice squad this week, in effect putting starter Tyler Loop on notice after a shaky preseason.

Brett Sullivan's 2-run single in the 11th lifts the Rockies to a 6-5 win over the Orioles
SUMMARY: Brett Sullivan’s two-out, two-run single capped Colorado’s 11th-inning comeback, and the Rockies beat the Baltimore Orioles 6-5. The loss was a blow to Baltimore in its battle for the final AL wild-card spot. The Orioles went 6-3 on their trip out West, but they dropped the final two against the Rockies. With Cleveland’s loss later Wednesday, Baltimore was one of three teams 1 1/2 games behind the Guardians for the last playoff berth. Baltimore took a 5-3 lead in the 11th on RBI singles by Samuel Basallo and Blaze Alexander, who finished with three hits, but Colorado rallied against Grant Wolfram.

John Harbaugh turns to rookie kicker Dominic Zvada in his first season as Giants coach
SUMMARY: John Harbaugh lost his job as coach of the Baltimore Ravens after rookie kicker Tyler Loop missed a field goal in the final game of the regular season to keep the team from making the playoffs. Harbaugh is turning to another rookie kicker in his first season with the New York Giants. Undrafted Dominic Zvada won the kicking competition against holdover Ben Sauls that ran from spring workouts through training camp. Falcons GM Cunningham calls decision to keep 4 QBs 'a little bit of an insurance policy'
SUMMARY: The Atlanta Falcons are opening the regular season with four quarterbacks and have not yet announced a starter. General manager Ian Cunningham says the decision to carry four quarterbacks was “a little bit of an insurance policy.” It was an apparent reference to the injury histories of the top two quarterbacks, Michael Penix Jr. and Tua Tagovailoa. The team also kept Cooper Rush and undrafted rookie Jack Strand at the position. Penix did not play in a preseason game as he continued his recovery from a left knee injury. He was cleared for team drills last week.

Now, the Penn State coach is looking forward to watching a surgically repaired Becht rebound from what the quarterback calls the “dark patch” in his career when the No. 18 Nittany Lions open a new era on Saturday against Marshall. A new era in Pittsburgh: Mike McCarthy takes over as Steelers run it back
SUMMARY: The Pittsburgh Steelers have a new head coach in Mike McCarthy, but the same old standards as they enter 2026. McCarthy, a Pittsburgh native, is tasked with putting the reigning AFC North champions in position to defend their title. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers is back for his 22nd and final NFL season. The team upgraded the talent around Rodgers, acquiring wide receiver Michael Pittman and selecting pass catcher Germie Bernard in the draft. The defense, led by longtime captain Cam Heyward and outside linebacker TJ Watt, could be one of the top in the AFC. The key to Pittsburgh's season will be a new-look offensive line that is relatively young and inexperienced.
