US--Redistricting Maryland

Maryland court rules Democratic-backed redistricting amendment cannot go on November ballot

SUMMARY: A Maryland court has ruled that a redistricting amendment cannot go on the November ballot. Democratic state lawmakers had approved a proposed constitutional amendment earlier this month. If passed by voters, it could pave the way to redraw congressional districts before the 2028 election. But a judge ruled Wednesday that lawmakers missed a July deadline they had set to prepare summaries of ballot measures. The judge paused the effect of his ruling to allow for an appeal. Democrats already hold seven of the state’s eight U.S. House districts. They hope that redistricting could help them win all eight.

US--Lockerbie Bombing-Families

For families of Pan Am 103 victims, delayed trial prolongs nearly 4-decade wait for justice

SUMMARY: Families who lost loved ones when a suitcase bomb detonated aboard Pan Am Flight 103 in 1988 had been preparing to attend the terrorism trial of the accused bombmaker. But a federal judge in Washington, D.C., on Monday postponed the case against Abu Agila Mohammad Mas’ud Kheir Al-Marimi, citing newly discovered evidence. The trial was expected to open Wednesday with jury selection. Al-Marimi is the third person charged in connection with the attack, but the first to be prosecuted on American soil. The attack on the New York-bound flight killed 270 people, a majority of them Americans. Eleven of the dead were on the ground in Lockerbie, Scotland.

US--Meta-Trial

Instagram chief takes the stand in a trial pitting Meta against states over social media harms

SUMMARY: The Meta executive at the helm of Instagram is defending the platform’s safety record. Adam Mosseri took issue during testimony Tuesday with a plaintiff attorney’s emphasis on low usage numbers for a feature designed to encourage young users to take breaks. Mosseri was appearing at a trial that pits Meta against the states of California, Colorado, Kentucky and New Jersey. The states accuse the social media giant of contributing to the youth mental health crisis by knowingly and deliberately designing features that addict children to its platforms. The trial began last week and is expected to last about six weeks.

US-MED--Measles-Deaths

Pennsylvania reports first 2 measles deaths in the US this year, both people unvaccinated

SUMMARY: Pennsylvania health officials report that two unvaccinated residents have died after being infected with measles. They are the first measles-related deaths in the U.S. this year, following three last year. The U.S. is experiencing its worst measles year since 1991, with 2,777 cases reported as of Thursday. In November, international health officials will assess if the U.S. and Mexico have lost their measles-free status. Vaccination rates have dropped below the 95% needed to prevent outbreaks, with exemptions rising to an all-time high among kindergartners. State officials aren't giving any more details about the two people, except that they lived in Lancaster County.

US--Affordable Housing Database

1000s of affordable housing subsidies will end in the next 5 years. A new database will help Pa.

SUMMARY: Pennsylvania plans to create a searchable database to monitor affordable housing. The initiative is part of the state budget passed in July. It aims to bring transparency to properties with discounted rents and track when these requirements expire. Over the next five years, more than 9,700 units in Pennsylvania will lose affordability restrictions. This could lead to rent increases or sales, forcing residents to move. The database will help officials and advocates find solutions before restrictions end. It will be compiled by the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency and available by the end of 2027.

Harris’ starting spot first came into question when the Commanders signed former Indianapolis Colts safety Nick Cross to a two-year deal in March.
