US -- Extreme Weather-Heat

Heat wave and high humidity will blast much of the eastern US this week, meteorologists say

SUMMARY: A heat wave will blast the eastern United States this week. The National Weather Service says temperatures rising ahead of the July Fourth holiday will feel hotter because of the high humidity that’s arriving with it. The weather service says several days of high temperatures will settle in across the lower Great Lakes, the mid-Atlantic and the Mississippi and Ohio River valleys. That's expected to last into next weekend across the Great Plains, Southeast and mid-Atlantic. Temperatures will reach well into the 90s and low 100 degrees F. Some cities could see their highest temperatures of the year so far as they host World Cup matches and celebrations for America’s 250th anniversary.

Comcast plans to split into two public companies by spinning off NBCUniversal and Sky

SUMMARY: Comcast is planning to split itself into two separate publicly traded companies by spinning off NBCUniversal and Sky. The company said Monday that its board and management team think each company will be better positioned to pursue its own strategic priorities, invest for growth and create long-term shareholder value as independent entities. Media and entertainment company NBCUniversal includes a theme parks division, Universal film and television studios, NBC and Telemundo networks, Peacock, and Bravo. Its portfolio will now include European media business Sky.

BBO--Nationals-Orioles

García's 2 home runs lift Nationals to a 6-4 victory over Orioles

SUMMARY: Luis García Jr. homered twice and drove in five runs to lead the Washington Nationals to a 6-4 victory over the Baltimore Orioles. Pete Alonso and Jackson Holliday each hit a two-run homer for the Orioles. After Zack Littell allowed two runs and three hits in five innings, a maligned Washington bullpen held on. Kyle Bradish retired the first eight Washington hitters. But the right-hander walked five of the next 11 he faced before being pulled. The Nationals managed just one hit off him in four-plus innings, but he allowed four runs, three earned.

BKL--Fire-Mystics

Mystics win a marathon matchup, topping Fire 124-123 in record-tying 4 OTs

SUMMARY: Sonia Citron scored 32 points, including the basket that put her team ahead to stay with 21.4 seconds left, and the Washington Mystics held off the Portland Fire 124-123 on Sunday in four overtimes. It tied the longest game in WNBA history. The other four-overtime game was July 3, 2001, when Washington beat Seattle 72-69. Carla Leite banked in a 3-pointer with 0.4 seconds left in regulation and sent the game to overtime. She led Portland with 32 points, while Sarah Ashlee Barker scored 25 and Megan Gustafson added 20 for the Fire.

BBO--This Week In Baseball

Alonso reaches 500 consecutive games, and Olson is closing in on the Braves' franchise record

SUMMARY: Pete Alonso played his 500th consecutive game this week. He already holds the New York Mets' record of 416, but now that he's with Baltimore, he has a long way to go to threaten the 2,632 that Cal Ripken Jr. famously played in a row. The only player with a longer active streak is Matt Olson, and unlike Alonso he’s on the verge of breaking his current team’s mark. Olson has played 864 straight games, the last 730 of which have come for the Atlanta Braves. The Braves’ record is held by two-time MVP Dale Murphy at 740.

SOC--WCup-Inside the Bracket

Inside the World Cup knockout stage bracket: Some teams have an easier path than others

SUMMARY: The World Cup knockout stage is set, and some teams might feel like they've drawn the short straw. Morocco and the Netherlands face off early, meaning one top team won't make it to the Round of 16. Meanwhile, Lionel Messi and Argentina have a favorable path, starting against Cape Verde. The bracket is based on group-stage results, not a selection committee, so some matchups seem tougher than others. France and Germany might clash in the Round of 16, while Portugal faces a challenging start against Croatia. The semifinals are set for mid-July, with the final in New Jersey on July 19.

BBO--Phillies-Mets

Kyle Schwarber sets Phillies record with MLB-best 30th homer in 5-4 win over Mets

SUMMARY: Kyle Schwarber became the first major leaguer to reach 30 homers this season with a two-run shot in the seventh inning that sent the Philadelphia Phillies to a 5-4 win over the New York Mets. The Phillies squandered an early 3-0 lead and fell behind 4-3 before Schwarber hit a 408-foot drive to center field off Kodai Senga, who was making the first regular-season relief appearance of his big league career. Schwarber connected in Philadelphia’s 84th game — the fastest anyone has reached 30 homers in franchise history. He has six straight 30-homer seasons, the longest active streak in the majors, and eight overall — most among active players.

Boone: No timetable on re-imaging Judge's rib injury

SUMMARY: The New York Yankees remained in limbo on a date for slugger Aaron Judge to return from a fractured rib, manager Aaron Boone said. Boone gave a brief update on Judge before the Yankees wrapped up a four-game series against the Red Sox at Fenway Park. Boone said Judge, out since early June with a rib stress fracture, is still awaiting follow-up imaging.

NBC bumps Yankees-Red Sox to stay with golf as Scheffler forces playoff

SUMMARY: It is rare that a New York Yankees-Boston Red Sox game gets preempted for anything, especially on network television. That was the case though Sunday night due to a rain delay at the PGA Tour’s Travelers Championship, and with Scottie Scheffler in contention. An NBC Sports spokesman said the decision was made in consultation with the PGA Tour and Major League Baseball to stick with coverage of the golf tournament once it resumed at 7:20 p.m. EDT until it finished or suspended due to darkness.

BBO--Yankees-Red Sox

Red Sox rally past Yankees 5-4 in 10 innings to complete 4-game sweep after Gray loses no-hit bid

SUMMARY: Jarren Duran singled home the winning run to cap a three-run rally in the 10th inning after Boston blew a two-run lead in the ninth, and the Red Sox finished a four-game sweep of the rival New York Yankees with a 5-4 victory. Boston starter Sonny Gray took a no-hitter into the eighth against his former team before Amed Rosario singled with one out. That ended a brilliant outing for Gray, who had nine strikeouts to reach 2,000 for his career. But the Yankees scored twice in the ninth off All-Star closer Aroldis Chapman to tie it 2-all, aided enormously by a bad throwing error from two-time Gold Glove right fielder Wilyer Abreu.

BBO--Yankees-Red Sox-No-Hitter

Sonny Gray loses no-hit bid against Yankees in 8th but Red Sox rally in 10th to finish 4-game sweep

SUMMARY: Sonny Gray was almost overloaded with reasons to celebrate. As if taking a no-hitter into the eighth inning and reaching 2,000 career strikeouts weren’t enough, his brilliant outing Sunday night for Boston came against the rival New York Yankees — a team Gray once pitched for and hasn’t been shy about disliking. So after winning a wild game 5-4 in 10 innings, Gray and the Red Sox were reveling in a four-game sweep at Fenway Park that marked their longest winning streak this season. Boston squandered a 2-0 lead in the ninth, but Jarren Duran’s game-ending single capped a three-run rally in the 10th that gave the Red Sox their first four-game sweep of the Yankees since 2018.

SUMMARY: X-rays were inconclusive on Eugenio Suárez's left hand after he was hit by a pitch during the Cincinnati Reds' 9-4 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates. Manager Terry Francona said Suárez will have a CT scan on Monday after traveling with the team to Milwaukee. Suárez was hit by a 92.4 mph fastball in the sixth inning Sunday.
