Judge: Michigan should reject Consumers’ ‘highly problematic’ dam sale
SUMMARY: A Michigan judge has recommended rejecting Consumers Energy’s plan to sell 13 dams to an out-of-state private equity firm. Judge James Varchetti says the deal is not in the public interest and poses safety risks. The proposal involves selling the dams for $1 each and requiring ratepayers to buy back power at twice the market rate. Critics argue the deal could lead to neglected maintenance and increased taxpayer costs. Consumers Energy and the buyer, Confluence Hydro, expressed disappointment but noted the recommendation is not binding. The Michigan Public Service Commission will decide on the sale by September.

Tornadoes pummel communities outside Chicago, tearing up homes and toppling power poles
SUMMARY: At least three tornadoes have battered communities outside Chicago, leveling homes and ripping down trees and power poles. Storms have also grounded flights and knocked out power for hundreds of thousands across the Midwest and Northeast on Thursday. The large column of air swept through Merrillville, Indiana, a town about 33 miles southeast of Chicago. Meanwhile, the nearby manufacturing and farm city of Streator, Illinois, has set up a family reunification center for displaced residents in its city hall as officials took stock of the major damage. The National Weather Service says tornado warnings were also in place in Chicago and in parts of Indiana and Michigan.

Rosie Pino wins GOP primary in New Jersey’s 9th District to challenge Democratic Rep. Nellie Pou
SUMMARY: Clifton City, New Jersey, councilwoman Rosie Pino has won the Republican primary in the state’s 9th District to take on Democratic congresswoman Nellie Pou. Pino defeated attorney Tiffany Burress in the northern New Jersey district, where Pou is seeking a second term. The Associated Press called the race for Pino on Friday. The district is being watched closely, particularly by Republicans, who saw an opportunity there after the 2024 election was closer than expected and Donald Trump won in places where his party hadn’t been victorious for decades. Pino says she extends a hand to everyone across the district regardless of political affiliation.

Young Mystics have shown they can compete, but they can still expect more growing pains
SUMMARY: The finish to this week's WNBA game between Washington and Indiana summed things up nicely. The Mystics are a team that shows its youth at times, but does not go down easily. Washington rallied from a 17-point deficit and took the lead in the final second, only to allow an open 3-pointer by Caitlin Clark that gave the Fever the victory. Washington had a young team in 2024-25 and then doubled down on that approach this season. Only two players on the current roster — center Shakira Austin and forward Michaela Onyenwere — have completed even two WNBA seasons.

Alonso HR, Rutschman's 3 RBIs carry Orioles past Mariners 7-5
SUMMARY: Pete Alonso homered to cap a six-run third inning against Bryan Woo, and the Baltimore Orioles withstood three homers by the Seattle Mariners in a 7-5 victory. Adley Rutschman drove in three runs and Colton Cowser hit a solo shot Thursday to help the Orioles salvage a split of the four-game series with the AL West-leading Mariners. Cole Young, Luke Raley and Dominic Canzone homered for Seattle. All three drives were off Kyle Bradish, who hadn’t given up more than two homers in his previous 80 major league starts. Bradish lasted only four innings. He was replaced by Tyler Wells (1-1), who pitched three hitless innings.

Early Thursday morning, fans again chanted Anunoby’s name, this time in a bar outside the arena as they celebrated one of the most memorable moments in New York Knicks history. Ex-NFL linebacker Darron Lee indicted on murder charge in death of partner
SUMMARY: Former NFL linebacker Darron Lee has been indicted on a murder charge in the death of his partner. A grand jury in Hamilton County returned an indictment Tuesday. Hamilton County District Attorney Coty Wamp says prosecutors dismissed a tampering with evidence charge to focus solely on the more serious allegation. The state is pursuing a first-degree murder conviction, which carries a life sentence. The decision on whether to pursue the death penalty against Lee is expected in the coming weeks. Lee is accused of killing 29-year-old Gabriella Perpetuo in February. Lee remains in the Hamilton County Jail without bond.

US OPEN '26: Scottie Scheffler trying to make history and Shinnecock tries to avoid recent history
SUMMARY: This U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills is all about history. There's Scottie Scheffler trying to take his place in history with the career Grand Slam if he were to win. And there's the recent history at Shinnecock Hills and it's not pretty. The USGA thinks it finally has it right after the greens were borderline unplayable in 2004 and 2018. The chief setup person for the USGA says the idea is to let Shinnecock Hills play as it was designed. That means slightly wider fairways. But there's no getting around the wind or some of the toughest greens around.

Walk this way: A's slugger Nick Kurtz happy to take free pass to help the team
SUMMARY: Nick Kurtz is quickly becoming one of baseball's top sluggers. The Athletics' first baseman has already drawn 64 walks this season, leading the majors. Earlier this season, he tied Mark McGwire's club record by reaching base in 48 consecutive games. Drafted in 2024, Kurtz has impressed with his patience and power.

Chicago White Sox trade veteran outfielder Derek Hill to the Philadelphia Phillies
SUMMARY: The Chicago White Sox have traded veteran outfielder Derek Hill to the Philadelphia Phillies in a swap between contending teams. The White Sox also sent $250,000 in international bonus pool money to the Phillies for minor league outfielder Dylan Campbell and minor league infielder José Colmenares. The 30-year-old Hill is batting .213 with four homers, eight RBIs and seven steals in 50 games this season. The move adds to Philadelphia’s outfield depth after Adolis García departed Wednesday night’s 7-4 victory at Toronto because of a pulled muscle in his right shoulder.
