Hundreds of thousands without power after Midwest storms, while East Coast braces for high heat

SUMMARY: Several hundred thousand homes and businesses were still without power after severe storms swept through the Midwest. Wednesday's storms damaged buildings and structures across a wide swath and caused more than a thousand fight delays and cancellations. The National Weather Service says it received more than a dozen reports of tornadoes Wednesday across northern Missouri, Iowa, Kansas and Illinois. Damage to buildings was reported across the region, including Chicago. Police in Des Moines, Iowa, say a man was killed by a tree that fell. More severe weather is expected Thursday, along with potentially dangerous heat and humidity along the East Coast.

Eldridge's grand slam caps wild comeback as Giants rally from 8 down in 8th to stun Nats, 11-10

SUMMARY: Bryce Eldridge hit a game-winning grand slam in the ninth to cap an incredible comeback by the San Francisco Giants, who scored 10 runs over the final two innings of an 11-10 victory against the Washington Nationals. San Francisco trailed 9-1 before rallying for five runs in the eighth and five more in the ninth to stun the Nationals and avert a three-game sweep. Big league teams trailing by at least eight runs in the eighth inning or later had lost 4,291 consecutive games since Cleveland stormed back from 10-2 down to beat Tampa Bay 11-10 in May 2009. Matt Chapman had four hits, including two home runs — his second coming as part of back-to-back homers with Rafael Devers in the eighth to set up the comeback.

FBN--Ravens-Loop

Tyler Loop remains confident after his miss cost the 2025 Ravens a playoff berth

SUMMARY: Tyler Loop lived out a kicker’s nightmare last season. His miss from 44 yards in the final game kept the Baltimore Ravens out of the playoffs. Five months later, he insists that failure is behind him. Loop says it took a day or two to accept the miss, but moving on wasn't too difficult because he needs to be ready for the next kick. He remains confident in his process. Loop wasn’t bad as a rookie last season. The final kick was his only miss inside 50 yards. But that was also the first significantly high-leverage field goal he had to try.

FBN--Jets-The Next Ryan

A third-generation Ryan is coaching the Jets, but on offense and without the bravado

SUMMARY: Seth Ryan is starting his New York Jets coaching career. He's following in the footsteps of his father Rex Ryan and grandfather Buddy Ryan as a third-generation coach for the team. Seth is taking a quieter approach than his often brash and boisterous father did during his six seasons as the head coach. Seth was hired in February as the Jets' pass game coordinator, focusing on offense rather than defense like his father, uncle and grandfather did. Seth previously worked with coach Aaron Glenn in Detroit. He’s excited to be part of the Jets, a team he grew up around. The Jets haven't made the playoffs in 15 years while still coached by Rex.

Health sleuths are watching for disease threats during the World Cup

SUMMARY: Health officials will be on high alert for germs as millions of soccer fans gather for World Cup matches. A heat wave may be the most obvious health threat. But infectious diseases can spread in a crowd. Measles is one of the most contagious diseases and is a top concern. But with weeks of matches spread across sites in the U.S., Mexico and Canada, officials are on the lookout for a long list of possible infections. They'll use a variety of tools, including sophisticated wastewater tests and tracking hospital and doctor visits, to sound an alarm if there's any concern an outbreak is brewing.

US--NFL-Concussion Settlement-Law Firms

Law firms cheated in filing claims with NFL's $1 billion concussion settlement fund, report says

SUMMARY: The court officials overseeing the NFL’s $1 billion-plus settlement fund for concussion-related injuries have barred five law firms from handling any more claims from former players, after finding that they fraudulently steered clients toward doctors willing to give them a Parkinson’s disease diagnosis whether they exhibited symptoms or not. A report filed in federal court in Philadelphia this week says the five firms represented or performed work involving 98 former players who in recent years sought payouts from the settlement for Parkinson’s disease claims. Dozens of those claims were approved to the tune of $95 million — with the share going to the attorneys totaling about $20 million.

Pirates place CF Oneil Cruz on 10-day injured list with broken left hand

SUMMARY: The Pittsburgh Pirates have placed center fielder Oneil Cruz on the 10-day injured list with a broken left hand. Cruz was injured while sliding into the plate during the fourth inning of a loss to Atlanta on Saturday. Additional tests revealed non-displaced fractures between his ring finger and his pinkie. The move is retroactive Monday. And it means the Pirates will have to try to stay in the mix in the NL Central without one of their most productive hitters. Cruz is hitting .264 with 14 home runs and 44 RBIs. His 98 strikeouts also lead the majors.

BBO--Dodgers-Ohtani

A 5-run lead slips away as Shohei Ohtani rues a missed ABS challenge in a 9-8 loss

SUMMARY: Shohei Ohtani's deference to his catchers might have cost the Los Angeles Dodgers in a 9-8 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates. Ohtani was on the mound in the seventh inning with the Dodgers leading by five. However, things unraveled after a couple of borderline calls to Pittsburgh's Brandon Lowe went unchallenged. The at-bat ended with Lowe lacing a two-run double that kept the Pirates in the game. Ohtani said afterward he probably should have challenged the calls. The four-time MVP allowed a season-high three earned runs and saw his bid for a fifth straight victory slip away when Pittsburgh rallied against the Los Angeles bullpen. Ohtani did make an impact late offensively, hitting a two-run shot in the ninth that brought the Dodgers within one.
