Millions in the US never finished college. With targeted help, reenrollments are ticking up
SUMMARY: A growing number of working-age people in the U.S. have attended college without earning a degree — a group that often has student loans to pay but without the credential to boost their earnings. Often referred to as “stopouts,” the group includes about 38 million people. In recent years, however, colleges and local governments have gotten better at helping them get back on track. The number of stopouts reenrolling has been on the rise, reaching more than 1 million in the 2023-2024 school year, a 7% increase from the year before, according to enrollment data.

Gov. Wes Moore falls short in push to redraw Maryland's congressional map to boost Democrats
SUMMARY: A proposal for a new Maryland congressional map has officially died with the conclusion of the state's legislative session. Maryland's session ended late Monday, but mid-decade redistricting efforts are set to continue next week in Florida and Virginia. A new Maryland map with the goal of ousting the state’s lone Republican U.S. House member in a heavily blue state was supported by Democratic Gov. Wes Moore, who is often mentioned by pundits as a potential 2028 presidential candidate. While the map was approved in the Maryland House, the state Senate never voted on it due to concerns it could backfire and cost Democrats a seat.

Redistricting battle narrows for US House as states seek partisan edge in November elections
SUMMARY: The timeline is tightening as some states attempt to redraw U.S. House districts ahead of the November midterm elections. Maryland's Democratic effort to reshape districts ended with the legislative session this week. Meanwhile, Florida lawmakers are starting a special session Monday for a Republican redistricting attempt. And Virginia voters are deciding Tuesday on a Democratic plan that could help the party gain House seats. Redistricting usually happens once a decade, but President Donald Trump sparked a mid-decade redistricting battle last year while calling on Texas Republicans to redraw their districts for partisan advantage. California Democrats reciprocated, and other states soon followed.

Peru election stretches into a second day after ballot delivery failures
SUMMARY: Thousands of Peruvians are back at the polls for a second day of voting. Electoral authorities extended the election by a day after failing to deliver ballots to voting centers on Sunday. More than 52,000 voters in Lima and others in Orlando and Paterson, New Jersey, are affected. Voting is mandatory for Peruvians aged 18 to 70, with fines for noncompliance. Thirty-five candidates are vying to become Peru’s ninth president in 10 years. The election comes amid a surge in violent crime and corruption. A runoff in June is likely due to the divided electorate.

Peru faces presidential runoff as election count drags on after ballot delays
SUMMARY: Voters in Peru face another presidential poll after no candidate won the weekend election outright. Electoral authorities continued counting votes on Tuesday. There are two candidates leading. Keiko Fujimori has 16.92% support while Rafael López Aliaga has 12.95%. The runoff is set for June 7. The election faced logistical issues that extended voting into Monday. Voting is mandatory for Peruvians from age 18 to 70. The election occurs amid rising crime and corruption. But Peru's economy remains stable because of its copper production and central bank leadership. Fujimori and López Aliaga have proposed tough anti-crime measures if elected.

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette announces it has found a buyer to keep the newspaper open
SUMMARY: Owners of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette said they have found a buyer who had agreed to keep the newspaper open, less than a month before it was due to shut down. Block Communications said that the Venetoulis Institute for Local Journalism, publisher of the digital-only Baltimore Banner, had agreed to buy the Post-Gazette. The newspaper dates its history to 1786, and if it had been closed, it would have left Pittsburgh as the nation’s largest community without a city-based newspaper. Terms of the deal were not closed. The Post-Gazette said it would continue to publish print editions on Thursday and Sunday.

Orioles manager Craig Albernaz is OK after taking a line drive off his face
SUMMARY: Baltimore Orioles manager Craig Albernaz was struck in the face by a line drive, then returned after receiving treatment to embrace the guy who sent the baseball whistling into the dugout. That’s because second baseman Jeremiah Jackson did more than just injure his manager. He also hit a grand slam that helped Baltimore erase a six-run deficit in a 9-7 win over Arizona on Monday night. Turns out, Albernaz wasn’t seriously hurt by the liner that struck him in the left cheek. But he was immediately taken into the tunnel for treatment. Bench coach Donnie Ecker said Albernaz would scanned as a precaution.

Jackson's grand slam, Alonso's 2-run homer give Orioles a 9-7 comeback win over Diamondbacks
SUMMARY: Jeremiah Jackson hit a grand slam and a solo shot, Pete Alonso put Baltimore in front with a seventh-inning homer and the Orioles rallied from a six-run deficit to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 9-7. Nolan Arenado hit two home runs and had five RBIs, and Ketel Marte hit a pair of solo homers to put the Diamondbacks up 7-1 in the sixth. But Arizona’s bullpen gave up the lead Monday night. Taylor Rashi allowed two hits and a walk in the sixth before Jackson hit a hanging slider into the left-field seats. One inning later, Jonathan Loáisiga hit Taylor Ward with a pitch before Alonso launched his second homer of the season.

Paul Skenes had to be almost perfect last year for the Pirates to have a chance. Times have changed

This year, the Pirates' lineup has improved significantly. Skenes improved to 3-1 on the season after Pittsburgh scored 16 runs in a win over the Washington Nationals. The Pirates, who were last in runs and home runs in 2025, are in the top 10 in both categories in 2026. New additions Brandon Lowe and Ryan O'Hearn are making an impact. The NHL playoffs have plenty of fresh blood, and a new Stanley Cup champion will be crowned
SUMMARY: The Stanley Cup will have a new home this year after the back-to-back champion Florida Panthers had their season derailed by injuries. They're not the only perennial contender to miss the playoffs, either, with the Buffalo Sabres among half dozen or more newcomers. The Colorado Avalanche have been dominant since October and go in as the favorite after clinching the best regular-season record in the NHL. That has rarely been an indicator of who hoists the Cup at the end of four rounds, and it's anyone's guess who comes out of the East as well as the West.
