Man charged with planting pipe bombs before the Jan. 6 riot argues Trump's mass pardons apply to him
SUMMARY: A man charged with planting pipe bombs near the U.S. Capitol on the eve of the Jan. 6, 2021, riot claims he's covered by President Donald Trump's blanket pardons. In a court filing Monday, attorneys for Brian J. Cole Jr. asked a judge to dismiss his case on the grounds that it falls under Trump's sweeping act of clemency for Capitol rioters. Trump pardoned, commuted the prison sentences and ordered the dismissal of all 1,500-plus people charged in the Jan. 6 attack. Nearly a year later, Cole was arrested on charges that he placed two pipe bombs outside the Republican National Committee and the Democratic National Committee headquarters on the night before the riot.

El Salvador has arbitrarily detained nationals deported from the US, Human Rights Watch says
SUMMARY: Salvadoran nationals deported from the United States are arbitrarily detained in El Salvador and their loved ones do not know where they are or how to contact them. That's according to a Human Rights Watch report released Monday. The detainees are among more than 9,000 Salvadorans deported by the Trump administration since January 2025. The New York-based group interviewed 20 relatives and lawyers of 11 of the 9,000 Salvadorans who have been deported during President Donald Trump's second term. The report says they have been denied due process and that worried relatives have been unable to confirm where the deportees are detained.

Winds, blizzards and triple-digit heat put over half of the US in the path of extreme weather
SUMMARY: Extreme weather conditions from coast to coast put more than half the U.S. in the path of rough conditions. Airport delays and cancellations piled up Monday in some of the nation’s largest airports, with more than 4,700 canceled across the U.S. Many schools closed early in the mid-Atlantic states, where high winds were in the forecast. Blizzards buried parts of Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota while torrential rains flooded homes and washed out roads in Hawaii. California and Arizona are dealing with unusually high temperatures for this time of year that are likely stretch throughout the rest of the week. Phoenix is expected to have five straight days of triple digit temperatures this week.

Fake farms get tax breaks, but Hawaii can't stop them yet
SUMMARY: Hawaii lawmakers are trying to draw a clear line between real farmers and landowners who use farmland zoning for tax breaks. A bill is moving through the Legislature that would sort farms by output, size, and purpose. The legislation asks state agriculture agencies to weigh production, investment, community value, culture, stewardship, and scale. Supporters say the rules could curb tax breaks for fake farms. Critics worry the system adds paperwork for small and subsistence farmers. Agencies have suggested Hawaii look at the way Guam handles things. The U.S. territory requires farmers to register with the island’s agriculture department before they can access local markets, tax exemptions and grants.

A $50 million push hopes to make child care a top issue in the midterm elections
SUMMARY: An advocacy group is providing support to candidates who want to expand support for child and elder care in the midterm elections. The Campaign for a Family Friendly Economy plans to spend $50 million to back Democrats in congressional races. The announcement comes as the cost of child care continues to rise and as waiting lists for federal child care subsidies continue to grow. American families face a slew of costs, including surging gasoline prices driven by a war in the Middle East that is unpopular with many voters. Republicans have begun to back child care as an issue crucial to growing the workforce, but their proposals tend to be less dramatic than those offered by Democrats.

March Madness tips off with First Four in Dayton, with Miami (Ohio) in the field and close to home
SUMMARY: March Madness tips off with the First Four, featuring one of this season’s best stories in Miami (Ohio) and a matchup of formerly embattled head coaches in Texas’ Sean Miller and NC State’s Will Wade. Coming off their only loss of the season, the RedHawks have a chance to silence some skeptics against fellow No. 11 seed SMU (20-13) on Wednesday night. The RedHawks, who are back in the tournament for the first time since 2007, were rewarded with a game in Dayton, roughly 43 miles from campus. There are two games Tuesday night to open the tournament.

Kerr earns his 600th win, and Golden State hands the Wizards their 12th loss in a row, 125-117
SUMMARY: Kristaps Porzingis scored 30 points and De’Anthony Melton added 27, and the Golden State Warriors snapped a five-game losing streak with a 125-117 victory over the Washington Wizards, earning coach Steve Kerr his 600th career victory. Golden State is without the injured Stephen Curry and Jimmy Butler. The Warriors are almost assured of ending up in the play-in round in the Western Conference, but it matters where among that foursome you finish, and they were able to end their skid against the lowly Wizards. Washington has dropped 12 in a row, but the Wizards still haven’t taken over last place in the East because Indiana has lost 13 straight.

SUMMARY: Alex Ovechkin is 40 years old and nearing the end of his 21st season in the NHL, all with the Washington Capitals, and his latest contract is up. Eleven months since becoming the league's career goal-scoring leader, the face of the franchise has yet to say whether this is it or if he wants to play again in 2026-27. The Capitals are planning for either contingency while ushering in a youth movement on the fly.
