Prosecutors seek to drop child abuse charges against Atlantic City schools superintendent
SUMMARY: Prosecutors say they won't proceed with a child abuse trial against Atlantic City’s superintendent of schools. That comes just weeks after her husband — the mayor of the seaside gambling resort city — was acquitted in the case. Marty Small Sr. and La’Quetta Small had been accused endangering and physically abusing their teenage daughter. Prosecutors say that after a jury found her father not guilty last month, Smalls’ daughter decided she no longer wanted the case to proceed. Prosecutors say they have also asked a judge to drop charges against a high school principal who had been accused of failing to report the teen’s abuse claim to state child welfare officials.

Democrat Mikie Sherrill sworn in as New Jersey governor with defiant tone against Trump
SUMMARY: Democrat Mikie Sherrill has been inaugurated as New Jersey's 57th governor. The four-term congresswoman and former Navy helicopter pilot is just the second woman to lead the state of nearly 9.5 million people. Democrats have now held the New Jersey governor's office for three consecutive terms, the first time in more than six decades a political party has done that. She swept to victory over her Donald Trump-endorsed GOP rival in part by pinning blame for high costs on the president’s tariffs.

New coach John Harbaugh embraces the challenge of turning the Giants back into contenders
SUMMARY: John Harbaugh takes over as coach of the New York Giants with plenty of power over shaping their future and an eagerness to turn them back into a contender. Harbaugh is reporting directly to ownership rather than general manager Joe Schoen, a structure that he's comfortable with from his nearly two decades with the Baltimore Ravens. While everyone involved is trying to downplay the arrangement, there is no doubt that Harbaugh is now the chief decision-maker in football operations. The 63-year Super Bowl champion brings instant credibility and immediate winning expectations to an organization that has struggled to sustain success.

SUMMARY: The New England Patriots are back in the AFC championship game for the first time in seven seasons, still alive for a chance to win their seventh Super Bowl since 2001. This time, it’s Drake Maye at quarterback and Mike Vrabel coaching on the sidelines instead of the Tom Brady-Bill Belichick combo that dominated the NFL during their six title runs. They'll face the Denver Broncos on Sunday. It’s an all-NFC West affair for the other conference championship when the top-seeded Seattle Seahawks host the Los Angeles Rams. The division rivals split their two meetings during the regular season, with each winning tight contests at home.

Phillies president Dave Dombrowski says losing prized free agent Bo Bichette to Mets a gut punch
SUMMARY: Bo Bichette's decision to join the New York Mets has left the Philadelphia Phillies reeling. The Mets' offer included opt-outs that appealed to Bichette. In response, the Phillies signed catcher J.T. Realmuto to a $45 million, three-year contract.
