Trump's crackdown on immigration is taking a toll on child care workers
SUMMARY: President Donald Trump’s push for the largest mass deportation in history has had an outsized impact on the child care field, which is heavily reliant on immigrants and already strained by a worker shortage. Immigrant child care workers and preschool teachers, the majority of whom are working and living in the U.S. legally, say they are wracked by anxiety over possible encounters with ICE officials. Some have left the field, and others have been forced out by changes to immigration policy. About one-fifth of the child care workforce is Latino, and one-fifth were born outside the United States.

Without affirmative action, elite colleges are prioritizing economic diversity in admissions
SUMMARY: Some of the nation’s most prestigious colleges have been enrolling record numbers of low-income students as campuses prioritize economic diversity in the wake of a ban on affirmative action. Students from lower economic rungs remain in the minority on elite campuses, but some schools have accelerated efforts to reach a wider swath of the country. College officials have been steering more financial aid to students whose families are not among the highest earners and seeking out students in poorer areas. Several elite colleges have new freshman classes with more low-income students than ever, including Princeton, Johns Hopkins and MIT.

Judge orders Kilmar Abrego Garcia to be immediately released from immigration detention
SUMMARY: The Department of Homeland Security is criticizing a judge's order that Kilmar Abrego Garcia be immediately released from immigration detention and vows to oppose it. U.S. District Judge Paula Xinis in Maryland ruled Thursday that Immigration and Customs Enforcement must free Abrego Garcia. The Salvadoran national has lived in Maryland for years but originally immigrated to the U.S. illegally as a teenager. An immigration judge in 2019 ruled Abrego Garcia could not be deported to El Salvador because he faced danger from a gang that targeted his family. When Abrego Garcia was mistakenly deported there in March, his case became a rallying point for those who oppose President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown.

SUMMARY: Yarden Garzon and Oluchi Okananwa scored 18 points apiece, and No. 7 Maryland set a program record for fewest points allowed with a 91-21 win over Delaware State. The unbeaten Terrapins have lost guards Lea Bartelme, Ava McKennie and Kaylene Smikle to season-ending knee injuries. They also held guards Saylor Poffenbarger and Addi Mack out of this one, but they weren’t needed in what was a blowout against this foe from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. Jayden Daniels will miss the Commanders' game against the Giants on Sunday
SUMMARY: Quarterback Jayden Daniels will sit out the Washington Commanders’ game at the New York Giants after aggravating his injured left elbow last weekend. Coach Dan Quinn said Wednesday that Daniels did not re-dislocate the elbow, which originally was hurt in a loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Nov. 2. The reigning AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year was knocked to the ground after throwing an interception in Washington’s 31-0 loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday and exited the game. Quinn said team doctors advised him to keep Daniels off the field against the Giants. This will be the seventh game the QB will have missed because of injuries this season.

Orioles agree to $155 million, 5-year deal with slugger Pete Alonso, AP source says
SUMMARY: A person with knowledge of the agreement says the Baltimore Orioles have agreed to a $155 million, five-year contract with slugger Pete Alonso. Alonso hit .272 with 38 home runs and 126 RBIs this year for the New York Mets, posting an .871 OPS that was his highest since he hit a record 53 home runs as a rookie in 2019. Lamar Jackson misses practice again. The Baltimore QB hasn't had a full week since early November
SUMMARY: Lamar Jackson missed practice again for the Ravens. Baltimore is facing another massive divisional game this weekend at Cincinnati. The Ravens this time listed it as a rest day for Jackson, who missed three games with a hamstring injury earlier this season. He hasn't been all that healthy — or that sharp — since returning. Jackson threw four touchdown passes in his first game back, at Miami on Oct. 30. Then he delivered a smart performance in a road win over Minnesota — but that was the most recent time he’s had a full week of practice.

Neither Tyrod Taylor nor Justin Fields participated Wednesday because of injuries. The team will assess their conditions as the week progresses. Mets front office taking heat with fan favorites Alonso, Díaz and Nimmo headed out of town
SUMMARY: Brandon Nimmo went first. Then it was Edwin Díaz and Pete Alonso on back-to-back days at baseball’s winter meetings. Three fan favorites headed out the door in 2 1/2 weeks — a powerful gut punch to angry New York Mets fans wondering what on earth the front office is thinking. As the club embarks on a major makeover, suffice to say owner Steve Cohen and president of baseball operations David Stearns are not the most popular couple in Queens right now. Stearns says there is work to do, but there are many good players available and he's confident the Mets will like their team when opening day arrives.
