Baltimore landlords found liable for hiring a sex offender who set tenants on fire
SUMMARY: Landlords in Baltimore are being held liable for hiring a convicted sex offender who attacked two tenants, raped one of them and set them on fire. A jury has awarded the victims $21.5 million. The attacker, Jason Billingsley, murdered a tech CEO days later. The lawsuit argued that the companies failed to conduct basic background checks on Billingsley, who was allowed to live on the property and perform maintenance tasks. The jury awarded the money last week. The defendants have signaled they plan to appeal the civil judgment. Billingsley has pleaded guilty to the attack and the tech CEO's murder and is now serving multiple life sentences.

Luigi Mangione fights to exclude evidence from his trial in the killing of UnitedHealthcare's CEO
SUMMARY: Luigi Mangione has appeared in court seeking to bar evidence from his state trial over the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Among the evidence the 27-year-old Mangione’s lawyers want to prevent the Manhattan district attorney’s office from presenting to jurors is a handgun that prosecutors say matches the one used in the Dec. 4, 2024, killing and a handwritten notebook in which they say Mangione described his intent to “wack” a health insurance executive. Court officials say the hearings could take more than a week, meaning they would extend through Thursday’s anniversary of the attack. Mangione, the Ivy League-educated scion of a wealthy Maryland family, was arrested in Altoona, Pennsylvania, five days after the killing.

Officer recalls confronting Luigi Mangione during manhunt in UnitedHealthcare CEO shooting
SUMMARY: A Pennsylvania police officer is testifying about confronting Luigi Mangione during an intense manhunt last year for UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson’s killer. Mangione was back in court Tuesday for the second day of a hearing in his bid to bar New York prosecutors from using some key evidence they say links him to last year’s killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Altoona, Pennsylvania, Officer Joseph Detwiler says that as soon as Mangione doffed his medical mask, the officer recognized the shooting suspect whose face had been on the news. The defense is seeking to keep jurors at Mangione's eventual trial from hearing about some evidence. He has pleaded not guilty to state and federal charges.

Former Trump lawyer Alina Habba is disqualified as top New Jersey prosecutor, US appeals court rules
SUMMARY: President Donald Trump’s ex-lawyer Alina Habba has been disqualified from serving as New Jersey’s top federal prosecutor. A federal appeals court said Monday the Trump administration’s maneuvers to keep Habba in the role were contrary to federal laws governing appointments. A panel of judges from the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia sided with a lower-court judge’s ruling after hearing oral arguments at which Habba was present Oct. 20. The ruling comes amid the push by Trump’s Republican administration to keep Habba as acting U.S. attorney for New Jersey, a powerful post charged with enforcing federal criminal and civil law. Habba’s staff hasn't returned messages seeking comment. The White House has no comment.

New York backs 3 new casinos, including at Mets stadium and a golf course Trump once ran
SUMMARY: New York City is set to get its first Vegas-style casinos, with one near the New York Mets' stadium and another potentially seeing a windfall for President Donald Trump. A state panel approved three casino proposals for gambling licenses on Monday. Manhattan won't see any casinos, as competing proposals were already scrapped. One of the casinos would be at a golf course that used to be operated by the Trump Organization. When it sold the operating rights to Bally's, the casino company promised to pay another $115 million if it won a casino license. Gov. Kathy Hochul said the casinos could unlock billions for transit funding.

Abortion opponents coming before the Supreme Court in challenge to state investigation
SUMMARY: A faith-based pregnancy center will come before the Supreme Court to challenge an investigation into whether it misled people to discourage abortions. Arguments are being heard Tuesday. The facilities often known as “crisis pregnancy centers” have been on the rise in the U.S., especially since the Supreme Court’s conservative majority overturned abortion as a nationwide right in 2022. In New Jersey, the Democratic attorney general sent a subpoena for donor information as it investigated whether centers there had misled people into thinking they offered abortions. First Choice Women’s Resource Centers pushed back, eventually asking the Supreme Court to let it challenge the subpoena before a federal judge.

Festival inspired by Nevada's Burning Man ignites Big Island debate
SUMMARY: Pennsylvania resident Andrew Tepper likes to stage festivals on pasture land he owns outside of Hilo, gatherings inspired by the famous “Burning Man” events in Nevada. Hundreds of people have attended, but now some of his neighbors are upset. Last year the Hawaii County Planning Department warned Tepper not to hold another festival until he obtained a permit, but Tepper admits he did it anyway. The county has already imposed fines totaling $34,000 for the gatherings in 2023 and 2024. Tepper is contesting the fines. Meanwhile, the Planning Department has recommended a county planning commission approve Tepper’s request for a special permit that would allow him to legally host the “Falls on Fire” festivals annually.

Heavy snow predicted for Northeast as Midwest still struggles with Thanksgiving weather snarls
SUMMARY: Black ice, snow showers and fog are pestering post-holiday travelers in the Midwest, while the Northeast is gearing up for its first major snowstorm of the season. More than 8 inches of snow fell at Chicago O’Hare International Airport this weekend, setting a record for the highest single-day snowfall in November at the airport. The previous record was set in 1951. Dozens of flights remained canceled or delayed there into Monday, and commuting conditions were expected to remain dangerous in some areas well into Monday night. In the Northeast, some parts of northern New England were expecting up to 10 inches of snow to fall Tuesday.

Federal review finds 44% of US trucking schools don't comply with government rules
SUMMARY: Nearly 44% of the 16,000 truck driving programs listed nationwide by the government may be forced to close if they lose their students after a review by the federal Transportation Department found they may not be complying with government requirements. Separately, the Department of Homeland Security is auditing trucking firms owned by immigrants to verify their drivers are qualified to hold a commercial license. The Transportation Department says it plans to revoke the certification of nearly 3,000 schools unless they can comply within the next 30 days. The first big snowstorm of the winter hits the Northeast
SUMMARY: The Northeast is seeing its first major winter snowstorm arrive just as the Midwest began to escape snow and ice that snarled travel after the Thanksgiving holiday. Some parts of northern New England are expecting up to 10 inches of snow. The windy, potentially icy storm could soak some parts of the area’s six states while piling snow in others. National Weather Service meteorologist Andrew Orrison predicted, "It’s going to be rather significant.” By Tuesday morning, snow was already falling. Schools and government offices closed around the Northeast, with officials citing potentially dangerous road conditions. Meteorological winter began Dec. 1.

The Commanders are still without Jayden Daniels but now are losing in overtime instead of blowouts
SUMMARY: So instead of losing over and over by 20-plus points, now the Washington Commanders are losing repeatedly in overtime. The common denominator: They are still failing to win, to the tune of seven consecutive defeats and a 3-9 record. One bit of good news is that Terry McLaurin finally returned to the lineup — and the Commanders could be about to get Jayden Daniels back from injury, too, for next Sunday’s game at the Minnesota Vikings. And at least coach Dan Quinn’s club suddenly is showing that it can be competitive, which hasn’t always been the case and does matter for the future, even if this season is, essentially, over.

Fortunate flags: How the Broncos extended their win streak to 9 with a little help from officials
SUMMARY: The Denver Broncos' 27-26 victory in overtime at Washington extended their winning streak to nine games. All of them have required comebacks. The latest one Sunday night was marked by some questionable calls from the officials. The Broncos benefited from three calls and one non-call in the final minutes. The Commanders overcame penalties to tie the game with a field goal as time expired in regulation. In overtime, Denver scored a touchdown, and Washington responded with one of its own. However, the Broncos deflected a two-point conversion attempt to secure the win. The Broncos maintain luck hasn't played a role in their streak.
