MED--Anti-Science Movement-Profit

Who benefits from the MAHA anti-science push?

SUMMARY: Powerful anti-vaccine advocates and people selling potentially harmful goods such as raw milk are profiting from the push to write anti-science policies into law across the U.S. They portray the Make America Healthy Again movement as grassroots, but it’s fueled by a web of well-funded national groups led by people who’ve profited – financially and otherwise – from sowing distrust of medicine and science. The Associated Press found state legislation that includes language in the text or public testimony that explicitly spells out that a reason to change the law is to make money or increase sales for dairy farmers.

Newspapers closing, news deserts growing for beleaguered news industry

SUMMARY: An estimated 136 newspapers have closed during the past year. News deserts are expanding and traffic to some of the top newspaper websites has been declining over the past few years. Those are just a few of the findings of an annual report on local news released Monday by Northwestern University. A broader look at the industry's economic problems over the past two decades is even more troubling: the number of newspapers published in the U.S. has declined from around 7,300 in 2005 to about 4,500 now. But officials at the Medill Local News Project say one encouraging sign is that young people aren't necessarily abandoning news but are instead seeking it out in different ways.

Authorities charge 2 more suspects with attack on prominent DOGE employee

SUMMARY: Two more suspects have been charged with the attempted carjacking and beating of a 19-year-old man who was working for the Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency. The Aug. 3 attack on DOGE employee Edward Coristine was a catalyst for President Donald Trump's law-enforcement surge in the nation’s capital. Two suspects — 19-year-old Laurence Cotton-Powell and 18-year-old Anthony Taylor — were arrested last week on charges of attempted unarmed carjacking, robbery and assault with intent to commit a robbery. Two 15-year-old suspects from Maryland previously were charged with Coristine’s beating.

Advice to feed babies peanuts early and often helped thousands of kids avoid allergies

SUMMARY: A study that upended medical practice by recommending feeding babies peanut products early to prevent allergies has had a big effect in the real world. A new study in the medical journal Pediatrics found that peanut allergies in children ages 0 to 3 declined by more than 27% after guidance was first issued, and by more than 40% after it was expanded in 2017. For decades, doctors had recommended delaying feeding children peanuts and other foods likely to trigger allergies until age 3. The approach has helped 60,000 children avoid food allergies, including 40,000 children who otherwise would have developed peanut allergies.

Appellate judges question moves to keep Alina Habba in place as top New Jersey prosecutor

SUMMARY: Federal appeals court judges questioned the Trump administration’s maneuvers to keep the president’s former lawyer, Alina Habba, in place as New Jersey’s top federal prosecutor. The three-judge panel of the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals sitting in Philadelphia didn’t immediately issue a ruling after the arguments. The hearing was attended in person by Habba, who sat in front of the judges during the proceeding. The hearing is the most recent development in President Donald Trump’s administration’s effort to keep his preferred candidate in the role of U.S. attorney for New Jersey, a powerful post that oversees criminal and civil law enforcement.

George Santos says he's humbled but dismisses 'pearl clutching' critics

SUMMARY: Freed from the prison where he had been serving time for ripping off his campaign donors, former U.S. Rep. George Santos says he’s humbled by his experience behind bars. But he says he's also unconcerned about the “pearl clutching” of critics upset that President Donald Trump granted him clemency. Speaking on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Santos said Sunday that if Trump “had pardoned Jesus Christ off the cross, he would have had critics.” Santos won office after inventing a bogus persona as a Wall Street dealmaker. Ian Cleary faced up to 10 years for the 2013 attack on a Pennsylvania college campus, and the two sides had initially proposed a four- to eight-year sentence. Jayden Daniels' injury isn't serious but defensive woes threaten to derail the Commanders' season

SUMMARY: While the Washington Commanders await word on Jayden Daniels' right hamstring, there is plenty of time to consider all of the other problems coach Dan Quinn must deal with following a 44-22 drubbing by the Dallas Cowboys.
