Trump and budget chief Vought are making this a government shutdown unlike any other
SUMMARY: President Donald Trump is making this government shutdown unlike any the nation has ever seen. The White House's budget office headed by Russ Vought is deciding who gets paid or fired in an unprecedented restructuring across the federal workforce. As the shutdown enters its third week, Trump said some of the programs favored by Democrats are “never going to come back.” The president calls budget chief Vought the “grim reaper,” and Vought has seized on the opportunity to fund Trump’s priorities, paying the military while slashing jobs in health, education, the sciences and other areas. The actions have been criticized as illegal and are facing court challenges.

Federal workers endure financial strain and fear layoffs as the government shutdown drags on
SUMMARY: Federal workers furloughed or working without pay are feeling the financial squeeze and fear being swept up in the Trump administration's layoffs. The fate of the federal workers is among several pressure points that could push lawmakers to agree to resolve the stalemate. The shutdown began Oct. 1 after Democrats rejected a short-term funding fix, demanding an extension of health insurance subsidies. The Republican White House has used the workforce as leverage to pressure Democrats. Labor unions have filed lawsuits to stop the layoffs. Frustration among workers is growing as the shutdown drags on. Furloughed federal worker Peter Farruggia says some bills will go unpaid this month.

Democratic governors form a public health alliance in rebuke of Trump administration
SUMMARY: Democratic governors from 14 states and Guam have launched a new public health alliance. They say the group will coordinate issues across state lines and share data and information about threats, guidelines and emergency preparedness. Those are typically roles of the federal government. But the governors in the group say President Donald Trump's administration hasn't been filling them. States also formed regional groups with similar aims to confront aspects of the coronavirus pandemic during Trump's first term. The new alliance has the help of a former director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

What to know about the arson fire and attempted murder at the Pennsylvania governor's mansion
SUMMARY: A 38-year-old man has pleaded guilty to attempted murder and arson for setting fires inside the official residence of Gov. Josh Shapiro. Cody Balmer was sentenced Tuesday under a plea deal to 25 to 50 years in state prison. No one was injured but the fire did considerable damage to the governor's mansion. Shapiro, family members and guests were asleep inside at the time. Shapiro says the attack has left his family feeling unsafe. He said he supports the plea agreement.

Pennsylvania man pleads guilty in arson attack at governor’s mansion while Shapiro’s family slept
SUMMARY: A man who scaled a security fence in the middle of the night and set fire to the Pennsylvania governor’s mansion has pleaded guilty to attempted murder and other charges. Cody Balmer entered the plea Tuesday for the attack in April that caused millions of dollars of damage to the state-owned building in Harrisburg. Gov. Josh Shapiro and members of his family were inside and had to be evacuated. No one was injured, but authorities say the 38-year-old Balmer told them he planned to beat the governor with a small sledgehammer if he encountered him. Balmer’s family has said he has a history of mental health problems.

Where does Cleveland clobber Pittsburgh? Its land bank.
SUMMARY: Some people think that Pittsburgh could learn something from Cleveland when it comes to affordable housing programs. Pittsburgh Land Bank Chairman Bobby Wilson says the city's relatively new land bank is doing “similar stuff” to Cleveland’s, but at a much smaller scale. Population loss in both cities has led to a large number of vacant and abandoned homes. Pittsburgh created its land bank in 2014, but it didn’t process a single property until 2023. By contrast, the Cuyahoga Land Bank facilitated just under 10,000 property demolitions since its 2009 inception, raising values by an average of $148,000 per property. The biggest thing keeping Pittsburgh from catching Cleveland is money. Pittsburgh’s land bank has no regular funding.

Commanders' slow starts and poor defense aren't new. The turnovers and poor running are
SUMMARY: Stop me if you’ve heard this before: The Washington Commanders got off to a slow start, and their defense had plenty of trouble tackling. Yes, neither of those is a new development for the 2025 Commanders. The problem this time, in a 25-24 loss to the Chicago Bears — but not, coach Dan Quinn hopes, again next Sunday at the NFC East rival Dallas Cowboys — was that, in addition to those recurring issues, Washington also had trouble running and stopping the run and kept giving the ball away. The Commanders are 3-3 after alternating wins and losses all season.

Brian Callahan becomes first NFL head coach fired this season and others are on the hot seat
SUMMARY: Brian Callahan is the first NFL head coach to be fired this season, and more may follow soon. Last year, three head coaches were fired midseason. The Dolphins, with a 1-5 start, have Mike McDaniel on the hot seat. Tua Tagovailoa’s comments about teammates being late to meetings have raised questions about team culture. Aaron Glenn, a top coaching candidate during the last hiring cycle, is struggling with rookie mistakes. The Jets have had a rough start, and the Ravens are also struggling at 1-5.

SUMMARY: Former New York Jets center Nick Mangold has revealed on social media that he has kidney disease and needs a transplant. Mangold, a two-time All-Pro and seven-time Pro Bowl selection, said he was diagnosed with a genetic defect in 2006 that led to chronic kidney disease. He is currently on dialysis while waiting for a transplant. Mangold was enshrined in the Jets’ “Ring of Honor” in 2022. He said he doesn’t have any relatives able to donate. He has gone public with a request for a donor with type O blood. Mangold expressed gratitude to anyone considering donating.

Giants rookie QB Jaxson Dart is drawing effusive praise from coach Brian Daboll
SUMMARY: Moments after beating the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles in prime time, New York Giants coach Brian Daboll could not stop praising rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart. Daboll singled out Dart as a leader and could hardly contain his excitement about getting the chance to work with the 22-year-old. Daboll quoted mentor Bill Parcells by saying Dart shouldn't be fitted for his gold Hall of Fame jacket after three NFL starts, but the decision to go to him and bench Russell Wilson has at least brought some hope to the organization.

Jets' Garrett Wilson sitting out practice with knee injury, status for Sunday vs. Panthers uncertain
SUMMARY: New York Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson is sitting out practice with a knee injury. Coach Aaron Glenn hasn't ruled him out for Sunday's game against the Carolina Panthers. Wilson was injured during the Jets' loss to Denver in London last Sunday. Initially thought to be a hip issue, it was later clarified as a knee injury. ESPN reported Wilson has a hyperextended knee but avoided a major injury. The Jets are also dealing with other injuries, including veteran wide receiver Josh Reynolds. If neither can play Sunday, the Jets will be thin at wide receiver.

Bengals are going all-in on rookies as Barrett Carter takes over at linebacker
SUMMARY: The Cincinnati Bengals have been relying heavily on rookies this season. Defensive coordinator Al Golden started rookie Barrett Carter at middle linebacker against the Green Bay Packers, where he played every snap. Carter and fellow rookie Demetrius Knight Jr. combined for 11 solo tackles in the Bengals' 27-18 loss. Coach Zac Taylor acknowledges the risks of playing rookies but believes in their potential. The Bengals could start five rookies against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday. This shift toward younger players began in 2024 because of the big salaries for stars such as Joe Burrow and Ja’Marr Chase.

Christian Pulisic leaves US friendly against Australia because of apparent hamstring injury
SUMMARY: Christian Pulisic left the United States' 2-1 win over Australia midway through the first half with a possible hamstring injury. American coach Mauricio Pochettino says the injury appears to be in Pulisic's hamstring. Pulisic, who was slowed by a right ankle injury last week, entered Friday's 1-1 draw against Ecuador in the 73rd minute. He stumbled to the field on Tuesday after being tripped by Jason Geria in the 26th minute. After being examined by an athletic trainer, the 27-year-old attacking winger left the field and was replaced by Diego Luna in the 30th minute.
