ICE's use of full-body restraints during deportations raises concerns over inhumane treatment
SUMMARY: U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers have been using a full-body restraint device called the WRAP during deportations. The Associated Press spoke to a number of people who said they were placed in the device after they had already been shackled. ICE's use of the WRAP has continued despite concerns about its safety expressed two years ago by a watchdog division of its parent agency, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The manufacturer says the device is intended for violent individuals, but detainees claim it is used to intimidate or punish them. A DHS spokesperson says ICE’s use of the restraints is “fully in line with established legal standards.”

SUMMARY: The remnants of Typhoon Halong have brought hurricane-force winds and ravaging storm surges to western Alaska. Authorities say one person is dead and two remain missing. They also say more than 50 people have been rescued. Floodwaters knocked some homes off foundations and swept others away. Officials in Alaska warned of a long road to recovery and a need for continued support for the hardest-hit communities. Elsewhere in the U.S., severe weather killed a woman in New York City who was struck by a solar panel. Rescuers in the Phoenix area found a man whose truck was swept away by floodwaters. Crews in southern California are preparing for potential mudslides in fire-ravaged areas.

J&J lays out plan to splinter orthopedics business into separate company
SUMMARY: Johnson & Johnson is narrowing its focus again, nearly four years after peeling off its consumer health business. The health care giant said Tuesday that it will separate its orthopedics business into a standalone company known as DePuy Synthes. The move leaves J&J focused on its pharmaceutical and MedTech segments, which make prescription drugs, contact lenses and technology to treat cardiovascular disease and help with surgeries. J&J announced in November, 2021, that it would turn its consumer health business, which makes Band-Aids, Listerine and Tylenol, into a separate company that later became known as Kenvue.

Now the native trees being planted in public park restoration projects, along Pittsburgh’s many riverfronts and waterways, and in community orchards across the region. Pawpaws bear North America's largest native fruit. One fan describes the flavor as a cross between a pear and an avocado with a little bit of banana. Gabrielle Marsden advocates for the restoring the trees to restore the habitat of the zebra swallowtail butterfly. A candidate disappeared months ago after an ocean swim. Can he still win?
SUMMARY: A local candidate in the suburbs of New York City will remain on the November ballot, despite vanishing months ago after a night swim in the Atlantic Ocean. A state judge recently ruled that Democrats can’t replace Petros Krommidas as their candidate for Nassau County’s 4th Legislative District. The 29-year-old Columbia University graduate has been missing since going out for a swim in Long Beach on April 23. Local Democrats had attempted to field a new candidate, but Republicans objected and sued. Some Democrats and friends of Krommidas are calling on residents to vote for him regardless.

China sanctions 5 US units of South Korean shipbuilder Hanwha Ocean over probe by Washington
SUMMARY: China has banned dealings by Chinese companies with five subsidiaries of South Korean shipbuilder Hanwha Ocean. The Commerce Ministry announced Tuesday that Beijing also was investigating a probe by Washington into China's growing dominance in world shipbuilding. The U.S. Trade Representative launched the Section 301 trade investigation in April 2024. It determined that China’s strength in the industry was a burden to U.S. businesses. International shipping and shipbuilding have become a recent focus of trade friction between Washington and Beijing. Each side has imposed new port fees on each others’ vessels, with the new fees taking effect on Tuesday.

SUMMARY: A man who scaled a security fence in the middle of the night and set fire to the Pennsylvania governor’s mansion has pleaded guilty to attempted murder and other charges. Cody Balmer entered the plea Tuesday for the April attack that caused millions of dollars in damage to the state-owned building in Harrisburg. Gov. Josh Shapiro and members of his family were inside and had to be evacuated. Of course the Ravens aren't as good without Lamar Jackson, but should the offense be this bad?
SUMMARY: The Baltimore Ravens signed Cooper Rush to play in case of an emergency. It hasn’t gone well. With Rush starting in place of an injured Lamar Jackson, the Ravens managed only 13 points over the past two games, falling into an even bigger hole entering this week’s open date. Even if Jackson is back after the bye, Baltimore’s inability to win even one game without him could haunt the team for the rest of the season. Sunday’s 17-3 loss to the Los Angeles Rams dropped the Ravens to 1-5.

Jake Moody goes from no job to kicking a winning field goal for the Bears against the Commanders
SUMMARY: Jake Moody lifted the Chicago Bears to their third consecutive win by making a 38-yard field goal on the final play against the Washington Commanders. Afterward, Moody started meeting some of his new teammates for the first time Monday night. It was a big moment for Moody. He went from high NFL draft pick by San Francisco in 2023 to playing in the Super Bowl for the 49ers to a guy without a job after coach Kyle Shanahan’s club cut him for missing two kicks in Week 1 this season. Chicago added him to its practice squad but he didn't play until Monday, when Cairo Santos was out with a quadriceps injury.

Chicago defeated Washington 25-24 on Jake Moody’s 38-yard field goal Monday night. The Bears extended their winning streak to three games under first-year coach Ben Johnson. NFL uses AI to predict injuries, aiming to keep players healthier
SUMMARY: Injuries are a big part of the NFL, and staying healthy can make or break a season. The NFL has partnered with Amazon Web Services to use technology and AI to predict and prevent injuries. The Digital Athlete tool collects data from all 32 teams to help manage players' health. This tool has been available for three seasons and is praised for its comprehensive data. It helps teams adjust practice schedules and workloads to reduce injuries. While overall injuries have decreased, experts say it's hard to pinpoint a direct cause. The data also helps improve equipment like helmets to reduce concussions.

SUMMARY: The New York Jets have had a rough start to the season by falling to 0-6 after a 13-11 loss to the Denver Broncos in London. Quarterback Justin Fields was sacked nine times and held onto the ball too long. Despite the struggles, coach Aaron Glenn isn't ready to bench Fields in favor of veteran Tyrod Taylor. Failures on sports' biggest stages provide unique glimpse into how to overcome adversity
SUMMARY: Athletes confront failure as often as success during competition. High-profile mistakes, like Simone Biles' "twisties" or Bill Buckner's infamous error, are reminders of this reality. Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Orion Kerkering mishandling a crucial play that led to his team's elimination from the MLB playoffs brings these mistakes back into the spotlight. Experts say overcoming such failures isn't easy. Sports psychologists emphasize mental preparation and coping strategies. Techniques like "release, reset, refocus" help athletes move past mistakes. It's also helpful, they say, that there's growing acceptance of mental strategies in sports, underscoring their importance in performance.

Browns taking hits on and off the field about the direction of their offense
SUMMARY: The Cleveland Browns offense is struggling after a 23-9 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday. Steelers coach Mike Tomlin questioned the decision to trade quarterback Joe Flacco to a division rival. Browns coach Kevin Stefanski was surprised by the trade but didn't comment on Tomlin's remarks. The Browns' offensive line issues made rookie quarterback Dillon Gabriel an easy target. Gabriel attempted 52 passes, but the offense failed to score a touchdown.
