Trump's workforce purge batters DC's job market and leads to rise in homes for sale, report finds
SUMMARY: A new report finds the Department of Government Efficiency’s remaking of the federal workforce has battered the Washington job market and put more households in the metropolitan area in financial distress. Wednesday's report says the number of homes for sale in the District of Columbia-Maryland-Virginia region has jumped by 64% since June 2024. The region’s unemployment rate has increased more than three times compared with the rest of the nation. The report notes Washington has had the nation's highest seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for four straight months. The report warns these changes could shape consumer spending and investment in the local economy. The White House hasn't responded to a request for comment.

FBI seized documents labeled classified from John Bolton's office
SUMMARY: Federal agents have seized documents labeled “classified," “confidential,” and “secret” from former national security adviser John Bolton's office, according to court filings that were unsealed on Tuesday. This is part of an investigation into whether Bolton mishandled defense records. The documents, seized in late August, appear to be about weapons of mass destruction and U.S. strategic communication. More than a dozen pages in the affidavit are redacted, leaving the content unclear. Bolton, who served under President Donald Trump, has been critical of Trump's foreign policy. A coalition of news organizations urged a judge to unseal the records related to the search, citing public interest.

Districts around the US are mulling school closures as student enrollment falls
SUMMARY: Districts nationwide are weighing how many public schools they can keep open as enrollment drops due to shrinking budgets, the falling national birthrate and a growing school choice movement. The decisions are gut wrenching. It’s a financial strain to operate half-empty school buildings, but research shows kids and neighborhoods don’t always fare well after closures. Major school systems including Philadelphia, Boston, Houston and Norfolk, Virginia, are considering shuttering schools, while a public outcry over potential closures has stopped them — for now — in Seattle and San Francisco.

Lowe and Mangum homer and Rays flirt with no-hitter in 6-2 win over Orioles
SUMMARY: Brandon Lowe and Jake Mangum hit solo homers, and the Tampa Bay Rays kept the Baltimore Orioles hitless through the first six innings in a 6-2 victory. After the Rays built a 5-0 lead in the seventh, the only suspense was whether starter Shane Baz and a host of relievers would combine for the second no-hitter in franchise history. Baz pitched four innings, walking three, and Edwin Uceta (10-3) and Garrett Cleavinger kept it going with a perfect inning apiece. But the Rays’ bid to complete the first no-hitter of 2025 ended when Tyler O’Neill led off the seventh with a line-drive single to center off Griffin Jax.

Donald Trump heads to the Ryder Cup, embraced by a golf world that once shunned him

College football picks: Punts trending toward record low as coaches get more aggressive on 4th down
SUMMARY: Football Bowl Subdivision teams are averaging 3.82 punts per game through Week 4 of the season. That figure on track to be the lowest since the NCAA began keeping the statistic in 1937. Punt attempts have decreased eight straight seasons, and the 2024 average of 4.06 was one full punt per game less than in 2015. Pirates ace Paul Skenes drops ERA to 1.97 in his final scheduled start of the season
SUMMARY: Pittsburgh Pirates ace Paul Skenes isn’t a big numbers guy, yet he does maintain high standards for himself. The 23-year-old right-hander allowed four hits and struck out seven in six innings in his final scheduled start of the season on Wednesday night. While he didn’t figure in the Pirates’ 4-3 victory over the Cincinnati Reds in 11 innings, he lowered his ERA to 1.97. Skenes became the first qualified pitcher with an ERA under 2.00 since Justin Verlander in 2022. He’s the youngest pitcher with a sub-2.00 ERA since 20-year-old Dwight Gooden’s 1.53 in 1985.

Schwarber pads NL homer lead with Nos. 55 and 56 in Phillies' blowout victory
SUMMARY: Kyle Schwarber said there have been times this season where he has pondered his accomplishments, then quickly switched focus. “Everything that we’ve got to do is in front of us,” Schwarber said after hitting his National League-leading 55th and 56th home runs in the Philadelphia Phillies’ 11-1 victory over the Miami Marlins on Wednesday night. Mayfield and Fangio face off Sunday when the Buccaneers host the reigning Super Bowl champion Eagles in a battle between two of the NFL’s six undefeated teams. Mayfield said Wednesday he’s only had small interactions with Fangio but the admiration is mutual.
