DC unemployment rate is the highest in the US for the third straight month
SUMMARY: Washington, D.C.'s, unemployment rate was the highest in the nation for the third consecutive month. New data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics released Tuesday shows the jobless rate reached 6% in July, highlighting how the mass layoffs of federal workers initiated by the Department of Government Efficiency have hit the District. An overall decline in international tourism may also be affecting the unemployment rate. Neighboring states Maryland and Virginia have also seen slight increases in unemployment rates in July.

Baltimore shipping channel reopened after explosion on cargo ship near site of 2024 bridge collapse
SUMMARY: Authorities are investigating the cause of an explosion aboard a cargo ship that was leaving the Port of Baltimore when it issued a mayday call. Officials say no injuries were reported. The ship W-Sapphire was transporting coal en route to East Africa when the explosion occurred near the site of last year’s Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse. The Port of Baltimore’s main shipping channel was closed for several hours Tuesday after the Coast Guard established a safety zone around the incident site. Officials announced late Tuesday afternoon that the channel had reopened.

Many towns are unprepared to handle train derailments and hazmat spills
SUMMARY: Train derailments involving spills of 1,000 gallons or more of hazardous materials happen a few times a year, often resulting in evacuations or fires. The Howard Center for Investigative Journalism at the University of Maryland found first responders, especially in smaller communities along rail lines, often lack the training, equipment and timely information from railroads to safely respond when that happens. Federal budget cuts could make those problems worse. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, fewer than 1 in 5 fire departments nationwide have their own team of hazmat specialists.

What to know about powerful Hurricane Erin as it heads past the US East Coast
SUMMARY: Hurricane Erin is creating dangerous beach conditions along the U.S. East Coast. High winds and waves are expected in North Carolina by Wednesday night. Erin was a Category 2 hurricane on Wednesday but its winds picked up and it could strengthen again to a higher category. The National Hurricane Center says it will weaken by Friday. Erin is not expected to make landfall in the U.S., but authorities warn of dangerous surf and rip currents. Evacuations have been ordered along parts of North Carolina’s Outer Banks. Officials have prohibited swimming at beaches in New York City, Long Island, and New Jersey through Thursday due to treacherous waters.

Oklahoma ideology test for teachers from New York and California draws criticism
SUMMARY: Oklahoma will require applicants for teaching jobs from California and New York to pass an exam that the state’s top education official says is designed to safeguard against “radical leftist ideology.” Opponents decry the exam as a “MAGA loyalty test.” Ryan Walters, the state public schools superintendent, said Monday that any teacher coming from the two blue states will be required to pass Oklahoma’s PragerU assessment test before getting a certification. PragerU is short for Prager University and promotes itself as a leading conservative nonprofit. State education officials say the 50-question test is finalized and will be rolling out “very soon.”

Hurricane Erin churns up dangerous waves and closes beaches along US East Coast
SUMMARY: Hurricane Erin is churning slowly toward the eastern U.S. coast and stirring up waves that already have forced dozens of beach rescues. The biggest storm surges are expected over the coming two days. Forecasters remain confident the center of the monster storm will remain far offshore. But the outer edges are likely to bring damaging tropical-force winds, large swells and life-threatening rip currents. The hurricane lashed the Turks and Caicos Islands on Tuesday. Warnings about rip currents have been posted from Florida to the New England coast. Authorities are prohibiting people from swimming in beaches in New York City, Long Island and New Jersey.

Fields on Jets' passing game: 'We're fine with 8-yard completions' and tiring defenses with runs
SUMMARY: The New York Jets' passing game has been short on long passes this summer. Fans are anxious about whether Justin Fields and the offense can stretch the field this season. Fields says they’re fine with taking short completions and wearing down defenses. Last Saturday, Fields and the starters played just two series in a preseason loss to the Giants. Fields went 1-for-5 passing for 4 yards. The Jets ran the ball 13 times for 55 yards. Fields insists there’s a method to testing teams on the ground. Rodgers, Heyward, Watt and Metcalf will sit out the Steelers' preseason finale
SUMMARY: Aaron Rodgers' first official snaps with the Pittsburgh Steelers will have to wait until Week 1. Coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday that Rodgers, along with several other key players, won't play against Carolina in Thursday's preseason finale. Most of the healthy roster, including new additions like Jalen Ramsey and Darius Slay, could see action. Tomlin believes Rodgers has shown enough progress in training camp, so there's no need to risk injury. This decision marks a change from Tomlin's usual approach, as previous starters typically played in preseason games. Rodgers is the league's oldest active player.

Phillies left-hander José Alvarado is reinstated following 80-game suspension for positive drug test
SUMMARY: Philadelphia Phillies left-hander José Alvarado has returned from a rehab assignment with Triple-A Lehigh Valley. He was reinstated from the restricted list before Tuesday night's game against Seattle. Alvarado's return follows an 80-game suspension for violating baseball’s performance-enhancing drugs policy. He was the second player suspended this year under the big league testing program. Alvarado is ineligible for the postseason, which could impact manager Rob Thomson's decisions on the closer role. Alvarado, 30, had 52 career saves, including a career-high 13 in 2024. Phillies president Dave Dombrowski said the positive test was caused by a weight loss drug.

Phillies benefit a 3rd time on catcher’s interference call, this one against Mariners
SUMMARY: For the third time in less than a month, the Philadelphia Phillies were on the positive end of a catcher’s interference call. In the first inning of their game Tuesday against the Seattle Mariners, J.T. Realmuto was called out on strikes on a pitch by Bryce Miller that would have ended the inning. However, Realmuto argued that his swing was interfered with by Seattle catcher Mitch Garver — who was starting behind the plate while usual catcher and MLB homer leader Cal Raleigh was in the lineup as a designated hitter. The Phillies challenged the call, and after a video review, it was determined that Garver’s glove did interfere with Realmuto’s bat on the swing, and Realmuto was awarded first base.

The bat, signed by Rocco, became famous after he was ejected for the flip during a tournament final. Last month, Rocco's father won a court order allowing him to play in the state tournament despite the suspension.

Realmuto, Schwarber and Stott homers power Phillies to a 6-4 win over Mariners
SUMMARY: J.T. Realmuto hit a go-ahead two-run home run in the eighth inning, Kyle Schwarber and Bryson Stott also homered and the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Seattle Mariners 6-4. He leads the NL in homers and the majors with 104 RBIs. Stott hit his eighth homer of the season, and Bryce Harper drove in a run on a sacrifice fly. David Robertson (1-0) picked up the win in relief. Randy Arozarena and Eugenio Suarez had RBI doubles for Seattle, which lost its fourth straight.

Pirates call up Bubba Chandler, baseball's top pitching prospect
SUMMARY: Baseball’s top pitching prospect is getting called up to the majors. A person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press that the Pittsburgh Pirates have decided to promote 22-year-old right hander Bubba Chandler ahead of their game Friday against the Colorado Rockies. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the roster move was not yet official. Chandler got off to a hot start in Triple-A this year but has stumbled lately and is currently 5-6 with a 4.05 ERA this year for Indianapolis. The Pirates are shuffling their pitching rotation after sending veteran left-hander Andrew Heaney to the bullpen.
