Neo-Nazi group leader sentenced to 20 years in prison for planned Maryland power grid attack
SUMMARY: The founder of a Florida-based neo-Nazi group has been sentenced to 20 years in federal prison for conspiring with his girlfriend to plan an attack on Maryland’s power grid in furtherance of their shared racist beliefs. Brandon Russell was convicted by a jury earlier this year in federal court in Baltimore. U.S. District Judge James Bredar imposed the maximum sentence allowed following a sentencing hearing Thursday. Russell's co-defendant, Sarah Beth Clendaniel, was previously sentenced to 18 years after pleading guilty to her role in the plot.

Judge blocks Trump's birthright order nationwide in fourth such ruling since Supreme Court decision
SUMMARY: A federal judge in Maryland has ruled the Trump administration cannot withhold citizenship from children born to people in the country illegally or temporarily, issuing the fourth court decision blocking the president’ birthright citizenship order nationwide since a key U.S. Supreme Court ruling in June. U.S. District Judge Deborah Boardman’s preliminary injunction was expected after the judge said last month she would issue such an order if the case were returned to her by an appeals court. The 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals sent the case back to her later in July. An email to the White House for comment was not immediately returned.

Judge stops hazardous waste shipments to Michigan landfill from five states
SUMMARY: A judge is stopping government contractors in five states from sending hazardous waste to a Michigan landfill. The decision Tuesday follows a year of legal challenges by Detroit-area communities concerned about possible environmental damage. Judge Kevin Cox says the risk is “compelling” and outweighs the any financial harm to Wayne Disposal. The suburban Detroit landfill is operated by trash giant Republic Services. The court order bars the landfill from accepting waste from Ohio, Iowa, New Jersey, New York and St. Louis, all places where the government is cleaning up old weapon sites.

Trump orders colleges to prove they don't consider race in admissions
SUMMARY: President Donald Trump on Thursday signed a memorandum requiring colleges to prove they do not consider race in admissions. This follows a Supreme Court ruling in 2023 against affirmative action. The court allowed colleges to consider how race has shaped students' lives if applicants shared that information in essays. Trump's Republican administration accuses colleges of using personal statements as proxies to consider race. The policy issued Thursday has similarities to parts of agreements with Brown and Columbia universities, which agreed to provide data on race as part of settlements to restore their federal funding. Conservatives argue colleges still consider race through proxy measures, but no clear pattern emerged in the racial makeup of last year's freshman class.

College endowment tax is leading to hiring freezes and could mean cuts in financial aid
SUMMARY: An increase in the tax on university endowments is creating financial challenges for the wealthiest U.S. colleges. Some, such as Yale and Stanford, have already laid off staff or implemented hiring freezes. The tax was signed into law by President Donald Trump and takes effect in 2026. Experts say it could lead to reduced financial aid. Colleges usually use most of their endowment proceeds for scholarships, but they'll soon have to use some of the money to pay the higher tax. The new tiered system taxes college endowments at 8% if they have more than $2 million or more in assets per student. This applies only to private colleges with at least 3,000 students.

Prosecutor takes over New Jersey police force amid deadly shooting reportedly involving trooper
SUMMARY: Concerns raised over a New Jersey police department’s handling of a deadly shooting that reportedly involved a state trooper has spurred a county prosecutor’s office to take over the force’s daily operations. Hunterdon County Prosecutor Renee Robeson announced the move Thursday, saying the police department’s chief and a sergeant had been placed on administrative leave by the town. Authorities have said a woman and her boyfriend were found shot to death in her Franklin home on Saturday. The woman’s ex-boyfriend is a 45-year-old state police lieutenant who was found dead later that day from a what authorities say was a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Rural Pennsylvania man kills neighbor and wounds responding troopers in gunfire ambush, police say
SUMMARY: Police say a 61-year-old man fatally shot a neighbor in rural Pennsylvania and then ambushed responding state troopers, wounding two while firing dozens of rounds from a semiautomatic weapon. State police Col. Christopher Paris told reporters Lori Wasko’s boyfriend called 911 after 11 a.m. Thursday from their home near Thompson to report shots fired. Paris says the 57-year-old woman was shot and killed outside her home near her vehicle. Paris says a man identified as Carmine Faino, 61, shot Wasko and then shot troopers Joseph Perechinsky and William Jenkins as they were arriving. Both troopers were in stable condition Thursday night. Faino was shot and killed by law enforcement.

The annual Chinese Lantern Festival in Philadelphia is a symbol of summer in the city
SUMMARY: Now in its eighth year, the Philadelphia Chinese Lantern Festival has become a seasonal staple for locals and tourists alike. This year's festival once again transforms historic Franklin Square into a luminous wonderland. More than a thousand handcrafted lanterns depict intricate scenes from enchanted forests to the underwater world. Some are four stories high. The centerpiece, a 200-foot-long dragon, has become an iconic symbol of summer in the city. Historic Philadelphia President Amy Needle says the lanterns are new each year, bringing many return visitors. The Philadelphia Chinese Lantern Festival runs through August 31.

SUMMARY: An autopsy has been conducted on a man who officials say killed his neighbor in rural Pennsylvania before unleashing a hail of gunfire on first responders. Sixty-one-year-old Carmine Faino was fatally shot by police Thursday after authorities say he killed his neighbor and then ambushed first responders, wounding two state troopers, running an EMT off the road and sniping a police drone from the sky. Athletics rookie Jacob Lopez finds zone, strikes out 10 to help A's stymie Nationals
SUMMARY: Athletics rookie pitcher Jacob Lopez tries to stick to a decidedly uncomplicated plan when his turn in the rotation comes up: Just throw strikes. The blueprint was almost flawless as Lopez struck out a career-high 10 in 7 2/3 innings while flustering the Washington Nationals in a 6-0 victory. Lopez, who was acquired from Tampa Bay in December, has not allowed a run in his last three outings and has reduced his ERA from 4.60 to 3.59 in that span. Anthony Richardson injured as Colts fall to Ravens 24-16 in their preseason opener
SUMMARY: Anthony Richardson’s preseason opener was cut short early, and the Indianapolis Colts went on to lose 24-16 to the Baltimore Ravens. Rookie LaJohntay Wester scored on an 87-yard punt return for the Ravens, and Keaton Mitchell ran for 68 yards and a touchdown. Baltimore won despite just 16 yards passing in the first half.
