Americans react to US strikes on Iran with worry as well as support for Israel
SUMMARY: Across the U.S. Americans are expressing a mixture of support, apprehension and anxiety over President Donald Trump's decision to bomb nuclear sites in Iran. Administration officials say the strikes give Iran the chance to return to negotiations over its nuclear program. Yet if the conflict spirals, it could test Trump’s foreign diplomacy skills and his support at home. At Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri, the B-2 bombers that participated in the weekend strikes returned home on Sunday. Nearby retired Air Force veteran Ken Slabaugh said he was “100% supportive” of Trump’s decision.

Judge will order Kilmar Abrego Garcia’s release before trial, but ICE plans to detain him
SUMMARY: A Tennessee judge plans to order Kilmar Abrego Garcia’s release from jail while he awaits a federal trial on human smuggling charges, but he is not expected to be allowed to go free. Prosecutors at his June 13 detention hearing said that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement would take him into custody if he were released. He could be deported before he has a chance to stand trial. Abrego Garcia is a citizen of El Salvador whose mistaken deportation has become a rallying point for opposition to President Donald Trump’s immigration policies. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Eastern half of US sweltering again, with dangerous heat wave expected to last until midweek
SUMMARY: Tens of millions of people across the Midwest and East are enduring another sweltering day of dangerously hot temperatures as a sprawling June heat wave grips much of the U.S. Most of the northeastern quadrant of the country from Minnesota to Maine was under some type of heat advisory Sunday. So were parts of Arkansas, Tennessee, Louisiana and Mississippi. Twin 6-year-old girls were among three people killed when thunderstorms brought trees down onto homes in central New York. Sunday marked the second straight day of extreme heat across the Midwest and East Coast.

Comedy and crime fighting join forces for police learning leadership skills
SUMMARY: The University of Chicago Crime Lab's Policing Leadership Academy tackles some serious topics like how to make data-driven decisions or how to help officers handle on-the-job trauma. But for one day in the five-month course that aims to change the culture of policing and improve community connections, captains from around the U.S. learn the art of improv with teachers from Chicago's storied Second City improv theater. While the value of improv's soft skills like being a better listener and thinking on your feet have long been recognized in unusual settings like corporate retreats, police departments and even the FBI are starting to see the benefit of “yes and.”

Orioles catcher Maverick Handley leaves game after collision with Yankees' Jazz Chisholm Jr.
SUMMARY: Baltimore Orioles backup catcher Maverick Handley left a 4-2 loss to the New York Yankees after being knocked over in a collision at the plate with Jazz Chisholm Jr. With Baltimore ahead 2-0 in the second, Chisholm hit a two-out double off Dean Kremer and went home on DJ LeMahieu’s single to left. Colton Cowser’s throw was up the third-base line. Handley moved to his left for the throw, arriving for the ball at the same time as Chisholm, who tried to veer to the inside to avoid contact. Chisholm, whose left cleat had come off as he speeded down the line, caught Handley with his right arm, fell past the plate and had to come back to touch it.

Improved of late, the Orioles still face an uphill climb to avoid a lost season
SUMMARY: A year ago the Baltimore Orioles looked like a dynasty in the making. Since then, they’ve been thoroughly mediocre. Even an improved stretch recently hasn’t helped their outlook much for 2025. After losing two of three to the Yankees in New York, the Orioles are 11 games under .500. They’ve gone 17-10 over their last 27, so perhaps the worst is over. But over the last 162 regular-season games, Baltimore is 75-87. It’s a remarkable decline for a team that won 101 games in 2023, started 49-25 last year and had a core of standouts that was young and cost controlled.
