NORTH EAST, Pa. - Michael William Paparella, formerly of Salisbury, Md., passed away in the home of his eldest daughter on the morning of Feb. 5, 2009, of heart failure. He was 93. Born in New Haven, Conn., he was the son of the late Vito and Lucia Gentile Paparella. Paparella graduated with degrees from Yale University and the University of Massachusetts. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the Southwest Pacific Area with an anti-aircraft regiment and with the U.S. Army Quartermaster Subsistence Laboratory in Australia. He was employed as a food scientist in managerial positions in the food industry. He was an administrator of the Marine Products Laboratory of the University of Maryland in Crisfield for many years until his retirement as Extension Professor. He was a consultant to the seafood industry with clients in Mexico and South America. He was an Emeritus Member of the International Institute of Food Technologists. His wife of 52 years, Elizabeth Deegan Paparella, predeceased him in 1994. He is survived by three daughters, Catherine R. Rizzo and her husband Joseph, of North East, Pa., Susan E. Sapp and her husband Gary, of New Haven, Conn., and Elizabeth A. Warfield and her husband Tony, of Crisfield, Md.; two sons, Michael A. Paparella and his wife Rebekah, of Austin, Texas, Charles F. Paparella and his wife Rebecca, of Salisbury Md.; 10 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. Two daughters are deceased, Mary Margaret Paparella died in 1975 and Teresa Lucia Paparella died in 1991. One brother and one sister are deceased, Salvatore Paparella died in 1969; Regina Paparella Cavallaro died in 2001. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Gregory's Catholic Church in North East, Pa. A funeral service was held Monday at Bounds Funeral Home on East Main St., in Salisbury. Internment was held in Springhill Memory Gardens in Hebron. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of the deceased to Coastal Hospice, P.O. Box 1733, Salisbury MD 21802.
