Mattie Lillian Turpin, 82
LINKWOOD - Mattie Lillian Turpin, 82, passed away on Sunday, May 18, 2008 at Dorchester General Hospital in Cambridge.
She was born at Bridgeberg, N.J. on May 11, 1926, and was a daughter of the late Harry and Marjorie Meredith Bennett.
She attended schools in New Jersey and moved to Cambridge when she was 16 to be with her sister, Marge Woodland. This is when she met James E. Turpin whom she married on Sept. 9, 1944. Mr. Turpin passed away on June 16, 2000.
Some years ago she had worked for the Rob Roy Co. and Bogash Co. in Cambridge. She also worked at Airpax for a number of years until she retired in 1988.
Mrs. Turpin was an avid reader and enjoyed studying the Bible, as well as sewing, knitting, crocheting and studying the universe.
Mrs. Turpin was a member of the Salem United Methodist Church where she had taught adult Sunday School class. She had also been a leader in the 4H Busy Bee Club, and was one of the Charter Members of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Linkwood-Salem Volunteer Fire Company and she had also served as treasurer.
Mrs. Turpin had been a resident at the Mallard Bay Care Center for the past five years and had been a patient at Dorchester General Hospital for the past two weeks.
Survivors include a daughter, Teresa T. Holland and her husband, Vaughn Holland of Linkwood; one son, James H. Turpin Sr. and his wife, Patsy Turpin of Salem; six grandchildren, J.T. Turpin Jr. of Salem, Kimberly D. White of East New Market, Jason T. Holland of Baltimore, Sherri Cox of Salisbury, Terri Humphries of Laurel, Del. and Wendi Bleyer of Cambridge; several great-grandchildren; one brother, Harry Bennett of Spokane, Wash. and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday at the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with the Rev. Mary Ann Farnell officiating. Burial will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park. The family will receive friends during the hour preceding the service.
Pallbearers will be J.T. Turpin Jr., Jason Holland, Vaughn Holland, Brian Willis, Dudley Bisker and Billy Baumgartner.
