Mrs. Margaret Smith, 89

CAMBRIDGE - Mrs. Margaret Smith, departed this life Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2008, in Dorchester General Hospital in Cambridge. She was 89. She was born Oct. 10, 1918, the second oldest child of eight children, to the late Cardel and Mamie Mortimer Stanley. In her early childhood she attended school in Cordtown. In 1937 she was united in marriage to Russell Smith. Margaret worked at various factories; her last place of employment was Old Fashion Foods. At an early age she attended Airey's Church and later moved her membership to St. Luke. She as a faithful member for many years and also was the oldest member of St. Luke. Margaret loved her pastor and her church family and attended church until her health failed. Margaret was known for her excellent cooking skills. She loved to shop, travel and spend time with family. She loved people, young and old. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her siblings, John (Grace) Stanley, Braxton, James, Linwood, Betty, and Oneida Stanley. She is survived by ten children, Leroy (Josephine) Smith of Colorado Springs, Colo., Russell (Stephanie) Smith of Baltimore, Wilmore (Louvenia) Smith of Trappe, Lorraine Smith Thompson of Cambridge, Linwood (Linda) Smith of Trappe, Mamie (Loretta) Smith, Elaine (Douglas), Narvel and Carvel, Francine (Andre), all of Cambridge; two special daughters, Josephine Holland and Mary Thompson; two sisters, Valerie Holcombe and Juanita (Franklin) Webb, all of Baltimore; 23 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; and two longtime friends, Ms. Jenny Banks and Mrs. Arizona Molock. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, at St. Luke UM Church, 712 Bradley Ave., Cambridge, with a viewing Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the church. Burial will be at Aireys Cemetery.
