SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Margaret Jane Smith, passed away at Scripps Memorial Hospital in San Diego on July 25, 2012. She was born in Baltimore, Md. to the late Carlton and Xanthippee Meekins. She and her sister Betty were raised in Cambridge. Upon graduating from Cambridge High School in 1942, Jane began her career working for the United States Federal Government. In December 1942, she married her high school sweetheart Bayly Edward Smith. During his naval career they lived in Delaware, Cuba, San Diego and Guam. After her husbands completion of his military career, they settled in San Diego, Calif. Jane retired from the federal government after 38 years of service. She and her husband loved to travel and enjoyed trips to Europe, Mexico and traveling in the United States in their recreational vehicle. Jane loved the outdoors and being near the ocean. She walked four miles a day along the beach with her friends. She also enjoyed painting and was a talented artist. She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years; and a daughter, Wallie Lee. She is survived by her son, Bayly Smith Jr. (Kathy) of Sarasota, Fla.; granddaughter Lindsay; great-grandson, Bayly Nash of Winston-Salem, N.C.; her sister, Betty Harrison and nephew, 'Buck' Wheatley of Cambridge, Md. A memorial service was held on July 28, 2012, with friends and family to celebrate her life. Burial will be in Sarasota, Fla. The family requests that donations be made to the charity of your choice.
