CAMBRIDGE - Margaret Daly McKaig, 77, long-time resident of Washington, D.C., died peacefully at home in Cambridge, Md. on August 7, 2015 of complications of septicemia. At her passing, she was surrounded by family, including her husband of 50 years, Dr. Brady P. McKaig. Born in Washington on September 16, 1937, Markie was the daughter of John J. Daly, and Mary Tinley Daly. John Daly was a newspaperman, drama critic of The Washington Post, biographer, poet and author of "A Toast to the Flag." Mary Daly wrote a weekly column "At Our House" about family life that was published for more than 21 years in Catholic newspapers in the United States and Canada. Markie had six siblings, all of whom lived in the Washington area. She graduated from Georgetown Visitation Preparatory School in 1956, where she was a gifted basketball player and proud captain of the Gold Team her senior year. She earned her nursing degree from Virginia Intermont College in Bristol, Va. in 1961. Markie earned her master's degree in social work from Catholic University in 1986. She met her husband while they both worked at Georgetown University Medical Center. Markie worked as a registered nurse at the Washington Post for more than 20 years, and worked as a nurse for thousands of high school and middle school students from around the country who visited Washington with the Close Up Foundation. She also worked as a hospice nurse for several years. For many summers she volunteered as a nurse at Camp Jabberwocky, a residential vacation camp for people with disabilities, on Martha's Vineyard, Mass. She was a member of The Association of the Oldest Inhabitants of Washington, D.C. and was an Associate Member of the American News Women's Club. Markie loved the theater, the Redskins, parades, Broadway show tunes, bluegrass music, chick flicks, convertibles, roller coasters, soft-shelled crabs, hats, and dogs. Markie was a thirty year breast cancer survivor and continued to be involved in patient advocacy efforts. She served as a mentor to many young women in her Palisades neighborhood. She was a special aunt to 21 nieces and nephews, 40 great nieces and nephews, and godmother to five. With her sisters, Ginny Daly (of Washington, D.C. and Rehoboth Beach, Del.) and Mary Gorman (of Chevy Chase, Md.), she formed the "Pistol Sisters" bike-riding trio that participated in many fundraising events. She was also a garage sale bargain shopper with her beloved older brother, Johnny Daly of Chevy Chase, who died in 2009. Together they went 'sale-ing' every Saturday morning. In addition to her husband, Brad; Markie's family includes sons, Kelly of New York City and Brian (Ann) of Milwaukee, Wis.; and daughter, Kathryn (Alex) Fritzsche of Easton, Md.; and six grandchildren. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 12, 2015 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at DeVol Funeral home, 2222 Wisconsin Ave, NW Washington D.C. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Thursday, August 13, 2015 at the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament, 3630 Quesada Ave., Washington, D.C. She will be buried at Saint Gabriel Cemetery in Potomac, Maryland. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Washington Animal Rescue League, 71 Oglethorpe St., NW, Washington, D.C. 20011, or to www.community.pflag.org/donate, or National Breast Cancer Foundation www.nationalbreastcancer.org/breast-cancer-donations
