A 33-year-old Willards man was in jail on $25,000 bond, charged with possession of controlled dangerous substance and obliterating a prescription drug label, according to the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office.

Rip Thomas Scotton was arrested at 2:25 p.m. Jan. 9 after a deputy stopped a vehicle for speeding on Richmond Avenue.

During the encounter, a deputy said the driver was extremely nervous. When the Drug K9 team arrived, he handed over an unlabeled prescription bottle containing what would be later identified as suboxone, the deputy said.

Woman charged in arrest incident

A 37-year-old Salisbury woman was released on personal recognizance after she was charged with hindering and interfering with an arrest Monday, according to the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office.

Liza M. Nichols was arrested at 11:41 a.m. after a deputy went to a residence to arrest a man on a violation of probation bench warrant, a deputy said.

Following the arrest, a woman followed the deputy and the man outside and repeatedly tried to speak to him and interrupt the deputy as he was attempting to complete the arrest, the deputy said.

The woman was warned by the deputy to stop interfering but she said she could do anything she desired, the deputy said.

After her arrest, it was discovered that there was a Circuit Court bench warrant for Nichol’s arrest from Somerset County, the deputy said.

Man charged with narcotics possession

A Salisbury man who is awaiting sentencing as a subsequent offender was convicted by a Wicomico County jury of possessing fentanyl, alprazolam and marijuana, all with intent to distribute, according to Wicomico County State’s Attorney Matthew Maciarello.

Irving Jones, 31, was convicted on Jan. 7. He is awaiting sentencing after being convicted of possessing heroin with the intent to distribute in 2010. He faces a mandatory-minimum sentence, Maciarello said.

Charges against Jones stemmed from a June 19 incident, during which a car went through a stop sign and a Maryland State Police trooper witnessed an interaction between the front seat passenger and a man in the rear seat passenger, Maciarello said.

The trooper approached the vehicle from the passenger side for his safety and was saw a plastic bag protruding from the front passenger’s pants and learned it contained fentanyl, alprazolam, and marijuana, Maciarello said.

A man was found in the back seat next to a digital scale, with $1,004 in U.S. currency and two cellphones, he said.

At a trial, it was proven the bag belonged to the rear seat passenger, Irving Jones, who threw it into the lap of the front seat passenger and ordered the passenger to hide it from police, Maciarello said.

The jury was able to conclude that based upon the quantity, packaging, and types of drugs, when combined with the scale, cell phones, and money found on Irving Jones, that he possessed all of these drugs for distribution.

Maciarello commended police and the Wicomico County Narcotics Task Force, as well as citizens and Attorney Richard J. Brueckner Jr., who prosecuted the case.

Salisbury man accused in assault

A 31-year-old Salisbury man was in jail on $10,000 bond charged with second-degree assault and false imprisonment, according to the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office.

Adam J. Starky was arrested Jan. 10 at 10:23 p.m. after a deputy responded to a domestic disturbance in the 300 block of Glen Avenue, a deputy said.

The deputy said he was told that a woman was screaming for help. Upon arrival, he repeatedly tried to get someone to answer the door of the apartment, the deputy said. Because of multiple reports of a woman screaming for help, the deputy entered the apartment and spoke to the resident, the deputy said.

Investigation revealed a man and woman had argued and the woman tried to leave. The woman told the deputy she was grabbed and pulled  back into the apartment and started to scream, the deputy said.

City police issue shoplifting arrests log

In an effort to reduce shoplifting, Salisbury Police are releasing names of those charged from Jan. 5 to 11. They are:

Marquez Labronte Armstrong, 18, of Salisbury; Malik Luaquan Fooks, 18, of Salisbury; Charles Richard Carey, 34, of Salisbury; Brandon Maurice Selby, 28, of Princess Anne and Tina Nicole Harris,  25, of Salisbury.

Man held on assault charges

 A 23-year-old Salisbury man was in jail on $25,000 bond charged with first-degree assault, according to the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office.

Lionel Christopher Watson was also charged with second-degree assault and reckless endangerment Jan. 4 in the 1000 block of Tuscola Avenue, the deputy said.

The arrest was made at 8:57 p.m. after a deputy responded to a reported fight at a residence, the deputy said. One of the people involved had a knife, the deputy said.

During the investigation the deputy was told a man had argued with his mother, brandished the knife and menaced her with it, the deputy said. The man appeared to be under the influence of alcohol, the deputy aid.

After investigating and talking to witnesses, the deputy arrested Watson.

Man accused of possessing drugs, handgun

 A 31-year-old Princess Anne man was held without bond after being charged with handgun in vehicle, possession of a handgun by a prohibited person and possession of a firearm during a drug trafficking crime, according to the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office.

Joshua Patrick Williams was also charged with possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute, possession of heroin and resisting arrest, a deputy said.

He was charged Jan. 6 at 4:58 p.m. after a deputy stopped a vehicle for speeding on West Road. The deputy detected a strong odor of marijuana from the vehicle.

The driver got out of vehicle when asked, but when he learned there was going to be a search, began moving away in what appeared to be an attempt to flee, the deputy said.

The deputy attempted to grab his arm and he swung at the deputy with his other arm, the deputy said. A struggle ensued until the man was handcuffed, the deputy said.

The search revealed what the deputy described as a substantial amount of marijuana, with some of it in a Maxwell House coffee can with a false bottom, Clorox and Comet containers that had hidden compartments and a Monster Energy Drink that concealed a hidden compartment when the top was taken off, the deputy said.

The deputy said he also recovered what was identified as heroin and loaded Taurus 9 mm semi-automatic handgun.

It was discovered Williams was prohibited from possessing a handgun due to a previous criminal conviction, the deputy said, adding it was the second incident this week in which a deputy found an illegally possessed loaded handgun in Wicomico County.
