SNOW HILL — Move your way and get fit this October, also known as Walktober. The three health departments of the Lower Eastern Shore invite residents to go for a walk or participate in any type of physical activity that they enjoy this October at any of the 45 identified public walking routes and trails or choose their own path.
Residents are encouraged to register for the Lower Shore Walking Tour at eventbrite.
Participants will be emailed a map of local parks and trails. All participants are asked to take a photo of themselves being active and submit them for a chance at a grand prize. The first 50 to register and submit a photo will receive a free T-shirt.
The more you participate in physical activity and send photos, the more tickets you will earn to be entered into the grand prize drawing. This event begins Oct. 1 and ends Oct. 31.
“Walking is the official state exercise and suitable for all fitness levels,” said Becky Jones, Worcester Health Officer. “We hope everyone will get outdoors in this cooler weather and take a walk. It reduces stress and your risk of disease such as diabetes, heart attack and stroke,” adds Lori Brewster, Health Officer for Wicomico County. Danielle Weber, Health Officer for Somerset County notes, “Now is the time to support both physical and mental wellness. We encourage everyone to take care of yourself and each other during these challenging times.”
For more information on walking and a list of the local walking locations go to the Worchester, Somerset or Wicomico pages.
