DELMAR - Leslie James Payne II died Saturday, June 27, 2015 at his home. Born in Aulander, N.C., he was the son of the late, Leslie J. and Jeanette P. Brittingham Payne. After completing his military service, he joined the Salisbury Police Department in 1956. He served many positions within the department, serving16 years as its chief. Retiring in 1980, he went to work as a department head of the Criminal Justice Academy for Wor-Wic Community College until 1998. He was an avid flyer for many years and a member of the "Quiet Birdmen." He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Barbara Holt Payne; sister, Iris Payne Horne of Virginia Beach; brother, William P. Payne of Salisbury; children, Jeffrey Lee Payne, Laura Holt Hamilton, Linda Carroll Hamilton, Leslie Kyle Hamilton and Carroll Stanford Hamilton II; and many grandchildren. A memorial service was held Wednesday, July 8, 2015 at the Rehoboth Presbyterian Church near Westover. Arrangements are in the care of Holloway Funeral Home in Salisbury.
